George as in The Famous Five. Books, nice dinners, flowers, cats and rage against the state of things. Erstwhile publishing person.
Sort of panzanella (toms, cuc, bit of melon on its last legs, basil, croutons from heel of sourdough), bbq'd lamb cutlets & a sausage each, potato salad from lovely David Brown's Deli & a token leaf. Penultimate night at seaside.
Farewell, dear Tess. Pretty, vain and characterful. Seen here in the waste paper basket. I did say characterful.
Just trudged upstairs to find that the fan in our bedroom which shows the temperature is reading 31 degrees ...
Well this was, as all the reviews suggested, bloody wonderful. Last night but it is coming to cinemas soon. #allmysons
One mezcalita down, sun ditto, our last night on Mexico's Pacific coast, second mezcalita has arrived. Maracuya since you ask.
Prawns with their heads still on sautéed in oil, garlic, a chilli (bereft of heat, alas) , coriander and a splash of white wine. Home-made oven chips. Fennel and blood orange salad. Aioli. White burgundy. HNY, dear A. See you on the other side! x
Loved Funny Girl, no 1 movie when I was 10, but can't quite decide if it means 2026 will be fab or miserable.
The tree arrived on Friday, but it's taken until today to finish putting up all the decorations. All quite twinkly chez nous now though.
Beached on the sofa, full of dumplings and art: dim sum & the Sainsbury Wing with @southlondongirl.bsky.social. Lovely mystic nativity and a truly hideous St Sebastian.
Just stopped at a French service station and had not had Cannonade of Valmy dress-up being on sale. To be fair we were at Valmy but ...
Huge congrats to @tommctague.bsky.social whose brilliant #BetweentheWaves was launched last night, is published today & longlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize. *proudretirededitorface*
Day 1 as a retired person. Flowers from my now - sob - former @picadorbooks.bsky.social colleagues. Better update my bio ...
Once, in the 1980s, I went to the ABC Fulham Road. So did Terence Stamp. God knows what we saw. I spent the entire film watching him watch it. RIP.
Merciful fucking god. AND the security details used every disabled parking space at Daylesford Organic.
Leaving a very sunny Ironbridge after a splendid evening celebrating @susannahstapleton.bsky.social's gripping & gorgeously writtten #ThatDarkSpring. And here is the woman of the hour, reading from it last night.
Paschal lamb, two tiny legs slow roasted in a low oven for two hours, over sliced potatoes and onions, doused in wine and stock and seasoned with lemon juice, oregano, thyme and garlic. Not bad. Not bad at all.
Timeline cleanse in the form of a particularly lovely tulip - Estella Rijnveld.
I have spent today pottering in the garden, which has been the perfect antidote to Everything Else. Please to admire my magnolia.
Thinking of my splendid if frequently infuriating ma today. Here she is in characteristic pose, sometime in the 1970s
Back home after knee surgery, up in the loft bedroom with a coffee machine and my new @saskiadanielceramics.com mug.
It's the end of the world as we know it, & while not feeling particularly fine about that going into a cold but sunlit garden certainly heightened the mood.
