“Must everything be boring and sad?” asks Perrin Fertha, husband of Senator Mon Mothma, in the Disney+ show “Andor.” He’s a middle-aged white man with shoulder-length salt-and-pepper hair pulled back at the top, and a short salt-and-pepper beard. In order to figure out whether selfishness leads to wealth (rather than vice versa), Piff and his colleagues ran a study where they manipulated people’s class feelings. The researchers asked participants to spend a few minutes comparing themselves either to people better off or worse off than themselves financially. Afterwards, participants were shown a jar of candy and told that they could take home as much as they wanted. They were also told that the leftover candy would be given to children in a nearby laboratory. Those participants who had spent time thinking about how much better off they were compared to others ended up taking significantly more candy for themselves--leaving less behind for the children.

Paneer lababdar, the best dish, is back at Spice Affair, the best restaurant. Maybe good things can still happen.

I wouldn’t say *no one else* knows about it, but it’s weirdly obscure given how great it is. It *should* be in the pantheon of Christmas classics alongside “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Maybe it’s more popular in Europe, but in the U.S. few people seem to even know about it. 🧵

This is Leo. He is not my cat, but I made friends with him when he was living in a nearby park. In my attempts to get him inside before the weather got too cold, I discovered that I was one of at least five people in the neighborhood looking out for him. One of those people adopted him!

This Christmas season I’m finally reading “A Christmas Carol,” not just having it acted out for me by muppets, and now I feel personally attacked by Scrooge’s girlfriend.

“That Thing You Do!” A groovy, mid-‘60s-style poster depicts Tom Hanks in a suit confidently standing in front of a rock band (The Wonders) jumping around as they play their instruments, plus the lead singer’s girlfriend Faye (played by Liv Tyler), also jumping.

I was pretty shocked when I saw this map earlier today. It’s great to donate to your local food bank, but it looks like people in New Mexico will be in the most desperate need when SNAP funds run out November 1. Wherever you live, if you’re looking for a food bank to give to, consider one in NM.

The highest rate is 24%, the lowest 5%. New Mexico is shockingly dark — almost a quarter of its population relies on SNAP, or did a few years ago!

Some other states with higher rates of SNAP participation include: Louisiana, West Virginia, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Illinois.
