In addition to switching to perpendicular recording, ED disks use a barium ferrite oxide. Barium ferrite forms rounder, hexagonal crystals, more suitable for encoding perpendicular domains.

The term diskette goes all the way back to the 8" disks used with the IBM 3740. But it would be the IBM System/34 that would define the standard track layout and MFM encoding standard inherited by the PC.
