The bleak Athenian lesson is that when an oligarch already commands the institutions meant to constrain him, ending his reign depends less on clever norms and more on shifting power away from him first.
Trump turned the presidency itself into something like the Thirty’s (an oligarchy that briefly ruled Athens), an office from which he claimed to stand above law and accountability (and, to date, was what happened in practice).
By the time he tried to overturn the 2020 election, the system had already rehearsed not holding him to account (or "render accounts" as was done in Brazil and Korea), so the move from oligarchic impunity to authoritarian power was incremental.
When that oligarchic expectation of impunity followed him into office, it hollowed out the idea of office itself, turning the presidency into a personalised platform rather than a bounded role.
