Food is my passion. Dietetics was my livelihood. But to this day, I still can’t resolve a question. Is it the food that makes a plate healthy. Or is it the nutrients? That picture by the way is me & my French market hat in Paris.
Missed the HHH online announcement today. My understanding is a document has been submitted which has been described as pragmatic, science-based, and intended to create a consistent federal framework. However, full public details have not been released. Does anyone have any more information?
The image hit an emotional cord for sure! Love ❤️ your newsletters. Envy you living in Italy. I did however find an Italian trattoria here in New York that roughly equals how I remember eating in Italy. From last night:
Tomato season in the Hudson Valley has been disappointing the last couple years. Then last week my local farm stand manager suggested I try a Black Krim. I never heard of the variety before. It was love ❤️ at first bite. The robust, earthy, umami taste is just what this tomato eater was craving.
Faced with competing claims & fuzzy evidence, I return to common sense - read labels, check ingredient lists, cook when you can, make nonjudgmental, practical choices that fit your lifestyle. Starvation is not an option. Without mechanistic evidence and a workable policy, it’s the best we can do.
I’m with you on the CA legislation but for different reasons. I’m also okay with fine tuning the NOVA system to reflect the achievement of modern food technologists. But I’m not okay with the dismissal of the classification system. Making my case by linking this little image about apples 🍏 🍎
FDA is systematically posting weekly updates to support National Nutrition Month. Each post is linked to relevant FDA website documentation. This focus of this week’s post is salt / sodium. #NationalNutritionMonth
#NationalNutritionMonth During the 3 decades I was an RDN, the only folks who promoted this event were my fellow dietitians. I can’t remember ever seeing a word from FDA or USDA during the entire month of March. Now I’m wondering how many more the FDA will be sending out …
Yes, yes, and yes … RFK is guilty as charged. Even a clock infected with brain worms however is right twice a day. Doing more home cooking and eating more real whole food is one place where my former RDN colleagues and the current administration can find common ground.
All commercial crackers are #UPF. Common sense says they can’t all be bad. I’m looking for a tasty, nutritious cracker that is available off the shelf. Taste is what drives choice. After my first bite, the cracker seemed to disappear. Bottom line, I’m unlikely to get these crackers again.
Hasn’t there been an increase since 1961. From about 60kg to 125kg?
Freshly prepared meals taste best, so cook when you can. But if you lack time, skills, or motivation, don’t worry. A food shopping app makes finding convenient options much easier. 🟢 GoCoCo - 10/10 Congrats! 🟢 Yuka - 75/100 Excellent 🟢 WISEcode - 84/100 Excellent IQ 🔴 FDA - healthy / NO
The joys of freshly prepared are no more and no less than the pleasure we humans derive from fueling our bodies with food that tastes really really good. #RealFood From @ranchogordo.bsky.social The Bean Book “Hearty Seafood Stew” page 140. gourmetmetrics.com
#gourmetmetrics Exploring the disconnect between what experts tell me to eat and the food I actually eat. ❌ 👅 Upset my gut. ✅ 🥘 Made with 5 or more ingredients. Recognizable ingredients. One cosmetic additive. ❌ 🏷️ #Sodium #SaturatedFat - too much salt / cheese for FDA “healthy” product label claim
👍 Mexican Black Beans #gourmetmetrics ✅ Tastes good to me. ✅ Food Quality - Acceptable to me #UPF product because no cosmetic enhancements and no isolated, extracted, or acellular nutrients are listed as ingredients. ✅ Nutrition Quality - Too much salt. 🫘 protein. Favorable Potassium:Sodium.
I love ❤️MyPlate! But I’m skeptical that Americans will stop using mozzarella cheese. Or swap turkey for pepperoni on a pizza. Or an unsalted tomato sauce and pizza crust. But must we go immediately to austerity? Encouraging a taste for moderation would be a tremendous step in the right direction.
Whole baked black sea bass - with fennel, potatoes, olives, herbs, side dish 🫘 from the restaurant we ate at last night. Too much fish, so took some back home. #RealFood #FDAhealthy #Salt Is it a healthy? Depends on what you’re counting … ✅😋 ❌💰 ✅🏪 ✅ Vegetables ⬇️ Saturated Fats ✅ Seafood ❌ Sodium
Why don’t Americans follow our dietary guidelines? Because #RealFood isn’t #Affordable? Or practical? Or convenient? Or possible given we only have a 24 hour day? Or because compliance with salt, sugar, fat restrictions don’t taste good and “healthy” is the Kiss of Death ☠️ #Palatable
