The New Mexico campaign of 1862 is, to me, one of the most interesting campaigns of the ACW - as an added bonus, it features in the plot of the movie The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. I'm enjoying this book in the Emerging Civil War book series. #Histbookchat #PhotoFriday
Here's my contribution to #PhotoFriday Ernest Evans was a pretty remarkable figure. James Hornfischer left a legacy both as an author and agent to many authors. This is a collaboration between him and his son. It would be interesting to find out how the writing process worked. #Histbookchat
I got a kick out of this story in Prit Buttar's Berlin Endgame 1945 - the decision to relieve Guderian at the end of the war is couched as time away to recover his house - the challenge is trying to find a spa that the Allies are not about to occupy. #Histbookchat

I had the opportunity to tour the James K. Polk State birthplace Historic Site in Pineville, NC. The cabin is a recreation using logs from similar period log buildings.

I had the opportunity yesterday to tour the Bridal House, a log cabin built in 1819. The cabin was built as a wedding gift by the 2nd generation of European settlers who settled in Tennessee on an American Revolution War veteran's patent. The chinking used rocks - a practice I wasn't aware of.
The Louisiana Native Guards is a much discussed unit of the ACW - formed as a home guard unit of free people of color while New Orleans was part of the Confederacy and then served during Union occupation. I'm hoping to learn about the interesting story of this unit. #PhotoFriday #Histbookchat

I'm glad I'm reading Wallace Terry's Bloods - his oral history of African-American Vietnam Vets. Terry has a nice arc for each story - pre-war, Vietnam experience, post-war. Each story offers insight - one that stands out for me is the story of William Norman. #Histbookchat

Adding some baseball history for #PhotoFriday - Junior Gilliam was a part of the great Dodgers teams of the 50s - teammates with Jackie Robinson and part of the 1955 World Series Championship team. He also is from Nashville - the street outside the AAA stadium is named for him. #Histbookchat
