The ice clinks against her teeth as she swallows down the entirety of the glass. It burns, briefly, but it’s a good remedy for lingering too much on things she’d left unsaid or shots unfired. He’d thanked her and quickly disappeared back to his calibrations before she’d had enough time to unzip her suit. She’d wanted to thank him too, for trusting her with his personal matters and to promise him that she’d do better. Maybe he knew what she’d planned to say and absconded before she could.

There’s plenty left in the bottle for more but she contemplates how sad it is to drink alone on a ship full of people. Back home, it’s the sort of thing associated with the isolated and complicated, but she doesn’t feel much like either. It’s that shame, of course, that keeps her there in her room alone. The shame of showing weakness like this, in the form of letting her mistakes swallow her mind for longer than they ought.

A knock at the door summons her from her own spiralling doubt. A familiar rhythmic tap that belongs only to one.

“Come in.”

“You didn’t think to invite me to your drinking session? I’m offended.”

Garrus doesn’t sit, likely doesn’t feel permitted to, until Shepard gestures to the seat opposite hers.

“Sorry, I thought everyone was resting. I’d have bothered you to join me if I'd known.” She lies. Shepard pulls the second glass closer to hers and fills them both with whiskey. “I’m out of ice, that okay?”

“Thanks.”

They both drain their glasses and set them back on the table, the silence afterwards a comfortable one that doesn’t linger for too long.

She can’t help but notice he seems calmer, likely letting his demons rest after the conclusion of their mission. Something in his soul seems at ease, as if the troubled waters have stilled and the dawn of a new day illuminates the ocean line.

“How are you holding up?”

“I’m fine, Shepard. Thanks to you, of course. I’m grateful for your help with everything, it’s always reassuring to know how much I can rely on you.”

“Don’t worry about it. I wouldn’t be much of a friend if I didn’t help you out from time to time, would I? You’ve always got my back after all, it’s about time I returned the favour.”

They share a small smile as the silence re-settles.

“I’m sorry for running off so quickly earlier. I needed a moment to truly process our time on the Citadel.” Garrus looks away to instead fix his gaze upon the wall, something not quite as distracting as Shepard’s smile. “I could tell you wanted to speak with me, usually I wouldn’t say no to it. You know that.”

“It’s fine, I understand.” She exhales a soft sigh. “So, why aren’t you getting some rest? I expect my team to be fighting-fit when it’s time to go.”

“You shouldn’t be hypocritical, Shepard. Besides, if you have no reason to rest then why would I? That and… I figured you might want some company.”

She swallows a dry-ish breath before tilting her head. “Company would be good, thanks. It’s so hard to sleep here, I can’t put my finger on it. I guess after two years of sleep, you kinda grow out of it.”

“I can imagine.”

“What do you usually do to unwind, I’m not sure I’ve ever asked.”

“I’d be surprised if you had,” he replies as he cracks his neck. “Usually I calibrate my rifle. Clean it, check everything is where it needs to be, keeps my hands busy–”

“That’s how you unwind? Are you serious?” She holds back genuine laughter, only allowing a small chuckle. “That’s not unwinding, that’s maintenance.”

“Maybe.” He looks back at her, a twinkle in his eye. “Or maybe you’re just doing it wrong.” He pauses before continuing, as if something hangs in the balance between what he’s already said and what is yet to be spoken. “Perhaps you should join me next time, put the theory to work.”

Shepard’s smile remains fixed to her face, a cheeky grin which her closest comrades have come to know only too well in her whims of amusement and playfulness. Something which Garrus can’t quite admit to himself that he finds truly endearing.

“So it’s a date. We’ll keep our hands busy and see how long it takes to tire us out.” She responds, a boldness to her flirting that can only come from Dutch courage. It’s a risk, she knows, to attempt to tip the balance between friends and… something more. But whenever the two of them share these moments together it almost feels wrong to not try it. In her own brazen and cocky way, of course. Just the way he likes her.

It takes Garrus by surprise and he blinks for a moment with a rather stunned expression on his face. “I– When you put it like that it sounds almost… Well, it doesn’t sound like much unwinding would take place.”

#ivywrites i completed garrus's loyalty mission yesterday in me2..... i should have let him kill more people. first time scribbling stuff down but i have so many thoughts ahh!!

It had been strange being back on the Citadel after so long. While it never really felt homely or all that familiar to her, it’s certainly different now. But it doesn’t matter how many shops want her likeness to peddle their wares, or how many fans approach her for an autograph, there’s that underlying resentment for her that never fades away. The price of being from Earth, she figures. In the quiet now of the Normandy, tucked away in her cabin, she feels so much safer here than anywhere she’d ever stepped foot on that station but whatever her feelings for it, it had been a necessary stop.

She’s always appreciated the candidness of Garrus’s thoughts. He never minces his words like a lot of people on the Citadel do, never tries to hide his true intentions behind some fanciful wordplay. He’s honest with her, even in his darkest moments. It’s hard not to relate to what he says, when he seeks an eye for an eye and justice in its coldest and final form. He values a closed ending with no loose strings and she respects it. She prefers it, after having so many of her own untangle and try to strangle her later down the line.

So when he’d asked her for a favour, there was no chance of her refusing it.

The mission had righted the wrong Garrus had felt but still Shepard felt somewhat hesitant about the entire thing. As if she’d said something amiss or fumbled a shot somewhere. It has been tense of course, Garrus is passionate and her attempt at finding some peace without violence had rattled his drive, and not for the better, but she still believed that she needed to try. Not all things can be fixed with words, she isn’t a fool, but when peace is an option she has learned not to deny its chance.

In the end, he fulfilled his mission. Another clean kill from her most skilled marksman. On the flight back to the ship, she’d asked him if he could teach her how to pull off a shot that good. “You don’t need advice from me, Shepard – I’ve seen how you handle a gun, and I’m not …
