Appomattox Book Update: The reader reports arrived this week from University Press of Kansas - very positive and helpful. Still some hurdles to go but I'm excited about getting this comprehensive military study of the Appomattox Campaign over the finish line.
Many thanks to the Civil War Roundtable of Gettysburg. I had a great time speaking there during last week's meeting held at the Adams County Historical Society at Gettysburg. Great group and great venue - lots of fun. #gettysburg #history @univpressofkansas.bsky.social @destinationgettysburg.com
OTD: July 1, 1863 As the armies begin their clash at Gettysburg, U.S. forces east of Richmond lunge at Robert E. Lee's supply line and D.H. Hill comes out to meet them at Crump's Crossroads. #Gettysburg @univpressofkansas.bsky.social
Restocking I like to hand these out at talks because it contains the best battle accounts no one has ever heard of before ... as well as mentions of 19th Century civil service reform and the Readjuster movement. The paperback version from @uvapress.bsky.social came out recently.
Current Read: By Michael Vorenberg from Knopf. Really enjoying this one - highly recommend it. #histbookchart #history
More maps today. Trying out some new elevations. A work in progress. And this one is ...
In Charleston to speak at the Fort Sumter, Civil War Round Table tomorrow. Out and about today enjoying the sights and the sites.
Cumberland Church Visit (Appomattox Campaign) Many thanks to Dirk Warner and Patrick Schroeder for showing me around the Cumberland Church battlefield today. We went deep today discussing battle lines, earthworks, troop movements, relics, and cattle feeding.
Many thanks to the Civil War Round Table of Milwaukee for a wonderful evening at the Wisconsin Club last night where I spoke about the Blackberry Raid and my book Gettysburg's Southern Front from @univpressofkansas.bsky.social. Stunning venue, great pre-game, and fantastic audience.

New arrival. Looking forward to reading new one by Lesley Gordon @ljg106.bsky.social from Cambridge Univ. Press. I've enjoyed her earlier books - including a study of the 16th Connecticut, a regiment that ended its spectacularly unsuccessful career at Plymouth, NC. #histbookchat #civilwar #history
Quite the bargain at $3,780.82! 😀 If you’re looking for gift ideas.
Brief research visit this morning at the Wilson Library in Chapel Hill - looking at some odds and ends related to the Appomattox Campaign. Had a great time speaking to the Raleigh Civil War Round Table last night.
Enjoyed a research day at the National Archives yesterday. Some wins and some losses there but the ceiling is always stunning. #history #histbookchat
The current state of the book nook. #bookhistory #historybookchat #shelfie
Speaking to the Hampton Roads Civil War Roundtable tonight about the Battle of Plymouth and eastern North Carolina in 1864. I have no plan to throw water bottles out to the audience . . . but who knows? @univpressofkansas.bsky.social #histbookchat
Enjoyed yesterday's research trip to the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC). The patient staff went the extra mile to help me get through a mountain of files. I saw a lot of these pocket diaries - they always worry me. So delicate. #history #BookHistory #civilwar
