HRI's Project Coordinator, Paulina Cortez, presented a poster at #AIDS2026. The poster shares data on harm reduction availability and coverage global trends. These services still need significant local funding and support to reach the people who need them.
The harm reduction movement can 👷rebuild, 💭rethink, and ✊rise. At #AIDS2026, we are engaging in discussions on how to enhance the accessibility of harm reduction and health services for people who use drugs, thereby preventing HIV transmission.
Punitive drug laws have a significant impact on the transmission of HIV. Criminalisation, stigma and discrimination block access to life-saving services. Today, at #AIDS2026 we share a message: People who use drugs must not be left behind in the HIV response.
And if you're around the Global Village, swing by the content creation lounge between booths 108 and 109 to say hi to our Communications Lead, Suchitra Rajagopalan, who is there supporting IAS in making conference content more accessible. See you there!
If you're at the conference tomorrow, come learn from our Project Coordinator, Paulina Cortez, presenting "Global trends in harm reduction availability and coverage as a structural indicator of HIV prevention access for people who inject drugs". Poster 214 at 12:00-13:00.
We're at #AIDS2026 in Rio de Janeiro! Yesterday, our Policy Analyst, Ailish Brenan led a session on the sustainability of harm reduction and today she presented a poster based on our Divest/Invest campaign.
For every Harm Reduction International Conference, we need extraordinary local partners. For #HR27Belfast, our partner is Extern! We're excited to learn from their experience supporting people with dignity and justice across Northern Ireland.

Mauritius’ investment in harm reduction programmes has halved HIV prevalence among people who inject drugs. By transitioning the approach to drug use from criminalisation to recognising it as a public health issue, sustained investment has been secured.
Stigma and discrimination marginalise #LGBTQ communities. Access to harm reduction services, mental health support and non-judgmental approaches save lives.
#Chemsex is the intentional use of drugs to facilitate, prolong, or enhance sexual activity, often among gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM). During #PrideMonth, it is important to highlight the harm reduction responses to eliminate stigma and prevent infections.
Punitive drug policies do not keep our communities safe. They fuel stigma, violence, exclusion and preventable harm. On #SupportDontPunish Day, we mobilise for a future rooted in harm reduction, decriminalisation, dignity and rights. Learn more: https://supportdontpunish.org/join/
The UNODC has been the primary channel for the majority of narcotics control aid tracked in this report. International donors should stop using money from limited aid budgets for ‘narcotics control’ activities, and invest in health and human rights-based responses to drugs.
