Led by Sybil Kawano, our museum educator, the weeklong teacher workshops backed by the Walk Family foundations were a tremendous success thanks to the hard work of our team at the Mineta-Simpson Institute at Heart Mountain. Thirty teachers came to learn about the Japanese American incarceration.

Thanks to the House Appropriations Committee for passing a National Park Service spending bill that restored $4.65 million for the Japanese American Confinement Sites (JACS) program that pays for projects such as root cellar restoration.

We're gratified by the support we've received from the Wyoming congressional delegation and the Interior Department for the transfer of the land that houses our historic hospital building. It's important to gain control of the land, so we can restore the buildings, which are rapidly falling apart.

We met with officials at the Interior Department and members of Congress from both parties to seek full funding of the Japanese American Confinement Sites program and the transfer of land where our historic hospital sits. We’re grateful for their support and generosity.

We’ve been on Capitol Hill this week meeting with Wyoming Sens. Barrasso and Lummis and Rep. Hageman to discuss solutions to the bureaucratic delays in the transfer of our hospital land from the federal government to us. We’re grateful for their help.

Visitors to Heart Mountain can combine a stop at our site with a hike in the Petroglyph Canyon in the Pryor Mountains of Montana north of Heart Mountain. Our staff hiked there Sunday to learn more about this fascinating part of our region.

Our success in running educator workshops, including the group pictured here from 2024, helped us win support for five years' worth of workshops starting two months from now. We'll assemble a group of 30 educators from 17 states from Maine to California. We can't wait!

Bacon Sakatani and Takashi Hoshizaki helped create the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation and make the site where they were incarcerated during World War II into a museum. They were in Los Angeles for a recent reunion of incarcerees. They were joined by David Fujioka.

On Medal of Honor Day, we remember Joe Hayashi and James Okubo, whose families were incarcerated at Heart Mountain. Their stories are featured in our museum, where Anne and Bill Okubo, James' children, visited last year during our pilgrimage.
