right now the area is covered in wildfire smoke so it looks overcast outside. it is overcast...WITH SMOKE
chin on porch, preen, scream when parent comes in, immediately back up to poop while parent watches, continue yelling long after parent has left
they are learning where the food comes in soon they will crowd the porch and shove their heads out waiting for food fledging expected between 7/20 and 7/26
mom feeding them a big cicada, she tries crunching it up...gives it to a chick...chick starts playing keepaway while she tries to figure out if it's actually eating the cicada or not...
if you're curious where all the pretty green leaves went, those got changed when the jelly bellies got their leg bling. it helps keep nest parasites down! wild birds are covered in species-specific mites :)

jane took a bath and then just came and hung out in the gourd for a bit, she must have been very tired
tw bird carnage (no actual blood, jane basically ruining this second year's day, 40 seconds of a 15 minute fight)
dad came in right after and none of the chicks moved, they were freaked out by the 15 minute long almost-murder by their mom
bro i think jane was a raptor or something in her past life, she was trying to rip this second year's tongue out of its mouth and at one point had it by the throat, would NOT let it leave the gourd kept rearing back and then slamming down like she was gonna use her beak as a can opener on its skull
