I'm so mad this book (The Devils by Joe Abercrombie) had such a bad ending. This shit is so funny, and there's so much Catch-22 style riffing that's so well done. But the ending fucking wastes everything the book has been and is just so fucking infuriating.

"I feel like a fucking birthday present," she muttered.

"And who doesn't like getting those? said Baron Rikard. "Never fear, Your Highness, you could not be better prepared." He indicated himself with a flourish. "You have received expert instruction in etiquette," waving to Balthazar, 'showing off," pointing to Brother Diaz, "letters," indicating Jakob, "frowning," waving towards Vigga, "indiscriminate slaughter -"

"Indiscrimmy what now?" she grunted back at him.

"It means thoughtless," said Baptiste.

Vigga opened her mouth, as if to disagree, then shut it, as if she'd realized she couldn't.

"Then there are whatever lessons Sunny has been giving you." The Baron flourished his pale fingers towards nothing in particular. "Invisible cunnilingus, for all I know -"

"Cunny what now?" grunted Vigga.
"It means-" began Baptiste.

"We know what it means," said Brother Diaz.

I normally like Reactor's feature writing, but this article by Ellery Weil just drips with condescension for readers and authors (and media consumers and makers more broadly), rather than properly assigning blame to publishers and corporations.

And yet. That message starts to lose its power when there seems to be only one definition of "us" available. Watching some of these costume dramas, I wonder who exactly they're for. They're probably not meant for me, a historian; but I don't think they're made for a generic "not a historian" population. They're made, seemingly, for a market-researchsd demographic. At their worst, they're the equivalent of romance novels that list the tropes they contain on the back cover, seemingly begging the reader to discuss them in BookTok.

And say what you will about the commodification aspect at play here, that kind of narrowing also stymies much of the mission of anachronistic adaptations before the show or the film even starts. If you, the viewer, are not the kind of irreverent, post-ironic soul who uses the word "girlypop" in casual conversation, this isn't relatable. It's just two alien ways of being, one overlaid stop the other.

But, well, there's something else that can't be fully ignored. People in the past weren't "just like us." They were still people, yes, who laughed and cried and hoped and feared and fought and loved. But they were different from us, in ways both great and small.

Sharing a screenshot as not to get entangled with this account and any of their discourse, but I personally feel like this is a totally different universe than the one I love in. I find much more apathy to reading than disdain, and I worry this is like "woke scolding."
