Kehinde Wiley, Three Graces (2005, 2012, 2023)

Kehinde Wiley has revisited the three graces on three separate occasions. Twice, he has reimagined the graces as three black men and the third time as three black women. Wiley often references the works of old master paintings; here is no exception. While all the graces are dressed in modern clothing, each iteration follows the same configuration as those in the past. The two works featuring men are clearly inspired by Raphael’s work, as the graces are shown grasping apples. Instead of looking away from the viewer, these graces seek direct eye contact. The work featuring the three black women is configured similarly to Botticelli’s. The women hold each other's hands, forming a delicate circle as if they are dancing. These paintings invite conversations concerning race and identity by rejecting the way that whiteness has been centered throughout history.

ACHES uses a white wall for a layered tribute to Dolores O’Riordan, Sinéad O’Connor, and Dolores Keane. The portraits overlap in transparent yellow, cyan, green, and red. From one angle the faces appear; from another they blend into color.

💡 Music Fact: Cranberries World reports that ACHES called the work “The Three Queens Of Ireland” and painted it at Hynes’ Bar in Stoneybatter, Dublin. The title pulls together three very different Irish music lineages: Dolores O’Riordan’s rock voice, Sinéad O’Connor’s confrontational pop and protest presence, and Dolores Keane’s deep roots in traditional song.

"Which plant St. Patrick chose as the shamrock has been debated for some time. There are several strong candidates among the members of the pea family:

White clovers are a natural choice for the original shamrock. These ground-hugging plants are native to Europe and naturalized in this country. They grow in pastureland, to the delight of dairy herds, and in lawns, to the dismay of gardeners. A rose-flowered variety of white clover (trifolium repens minus) is listed in some seed catalogs as the “true Irish shamrock.”
