Would love to see a midnight movie programmer pair this with SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT 5: THE TOY MAKER.
Pinocchio being this actual puppet with lots of room for expression was just delightful. There’s a huge emphasis on favoring practical effects (like this mossy witch spin on the Blue Fairy) and those who make the magic happen. The end credits are a sweet tribute to them.
It’s driving me crazy that I kind of had a ball with PINOCCHIO: UNSTRUNG. A bloody ‘90s DTV slasher that somehow elicits a surprising amount of charm through simply giving into its lunacy. I laughed a whole lot. You’ll know if you’ll have a good time based on this image alone.
I could go see THE ODYSSEY again, but decided to come out for the real movie event of the summer.
Who knew the key to revitalizing PARANORMAL ACTIVITY would be through the stage? Starts off as a reimagining of the first movie before transforming into its own terrifying beast (and a mean one too). This production gave me some major goosebumps. I really loved it!
I am very excited for TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA.
EVIL DEAD BURN is the first one of these I have little desire to revisit. Deadite carnage by way of a thudding and deeply unpleasant domestic violence allegory that keeps hitting the same note and then hits it even harder. Even the gore is masked in this ugly grey overcast.
The spirit of Buster Keaton is alive and well in cinemas this weekend.
This feels like the movie Pierre Coffin has always wanted to make and it shows in the execution of its slapstick. All in the spirit of making movies. What can I say? It made me smile a whole lot. Gru really held these guys back.
I think it’s pretty cool that MINIONS & MONSTERS takes great pride in introducing kids to the silent clowns. Even Muybridge, the Lumières and Méliès couldn’t resist capturing these little troublemakers. A minion uses a film splicer! Illumination’s best movie by a mile.
Summer nights are for insane double features like BREAKDOWN and FLIGHT PLAN on 35mm at the @somervilletheatre.bsky.social.
Enjoyed spending my 31st at the @somervilletheatre.bsky.social with two cozy Sunday afternoon cable westerns
Real glad this AMC is giving me the BACKROOMS treatment on my way to SCARY MOVIE in the further most part of the theater.
This was me during any given second watching GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES for the first time at the Brattle tonight. Movies are this girl’s best friend, especially ones with the Technicolor luminescence of Marilyn and Jane.
I just want to thank ELLA ENCHANTED for this incredible reaction image.
Went to Used Book Superstore today and found a real treasure 🐈⬛
It’s such a bummer that IS GOD IS probably won’t get its dues until it hits streaming. Go see it in a theater this weekend! It’s weird, tragic, hilarious, and an all-around great revenge road trip odyssey.
One of the more underrated aspects of OBSESSION is that it could so easily stop the movie in order to explain the people/rules behind the One Wish Willow, but Curry Barker wisely gives you just enough to get by. Much funnier to approach its mechanical horrors so nonchalantly.
Happy CUTTING CARDS day to all who celebrate! Lance Henriksen, Kevin Tighe and a burning desire to finger one another. It’s still my favorite episode of TALES FROM THE CRYPT.
Saw OBSESSION again last night and believe everything you’ve heard about Inde Navarrette. Talk about some multilayered nightmare fuel.
First time A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE on 35mm at the Harvard Film Archive. I’m so fucking sad right now.
Seeing the batch of grey-coated trailers for this summer’s upcoming blockbusters was dispiriting beforehand and downright embarrassing in the wake of an orgy of colors. In the words of a racing legend, get that weak shit off my track.
There’s an important lesson in tonight’s mass appreciation of SPEED RACER that the Wachowskis never fell off. It’s worth losing money in pursuit of a film that looks, sounds, moves and transforms like nothing you’ve ever seen.
It feels like a joke that Warner Bros. has relegated SPEED RACER to a scattering of showtimes rather than a full-on apology release. 2008 had no idea it held a landmark piece of cinema that would later serve as the premiere IMAX trip of 2026. I felt this movie deep in my soul.
