The slice of individual freedom in exercise must be framed within a broader system of human domination in order to place this freedom in the service of collective empancipation

Exercise science offers a helpful set of definitions for understanding how we expend energy, but without an analysis of capitalist social relations we can't properly use them

The past few decades have seen a rebirth of physical culture on the left, but there remains a lack of clarity on key terms

Why does it feel so weird to talk about exercise and left politics? Want to get beyond the dichotomy of overly optimistic lifting for the rev and overly pessimistic rejection of all exercise as social domination?

"This categorization (deskilled labor, skilled technicians, technical professionals, & management) should be understood as a form of subjective violence imposed upon the proletariat—a separation of people from the technical knowledge necessary for informed and participatory social decision-making."

"Liberated from the imperatives of profit, humanity can choose how to manage its own material existence rather than ceding it to the logic of capital."

In fighting on this terrain, communism seeks to reshape it. This is first a project of provisioning society with industry as it exists, followed by a structural transformation "in accordance with communist social imperatives."

Chavez follows with a schematic map of technical expertise as capitalism currently distributes it. The cleaving of the workforce into deskilled labor, technicians, engineers/scientists, and managers is both a form of social violence but also the terrain communists must fight on.

Counterintuitively, capitalism's generalization of industry does not also generalize technical expertise or industrial skills across humanity. Instead, capitalism tends towards a deindustrialization of work while the material output of the global factory continues to expand.

"A central challenge for the task of communist construction is therefore the leveraging and deployment of technical expertise. This expertise is not internally homogeneous, and therefore has a multifaceted relationship to the communist project."
