In the past couple of years I’ve read a bit of George Orwell’s non fiction for the first time. I love his style and wit. It’s 90 years old but doesn’t seem old fashioned at all. This amused me greatly

Cycle clips, still one of my most useful cycling accessories, 37 years after buying them at Halfords in Wokingham. I think I paid an extra 20p or so for the reflective versions, so pleased I did 🚲

Perfect weather to explore some bridleways. This is near the site of probably the largest and bloodiest battle on English soil.

My local ward result came in. Labour hold. Two interesting things. 1. Based upon campaigning it appeared to be a 2 horse race between Lab & Lib Dems but actually Greens came close 2nd. 2. Labour were very keen, to the extent of one of the sitting ward councillors door knocking us at 7pm.

Some industrial waterway use. Aire & Calder Navigation near Stanley (Wakefield). 25 Apr 2026

A scruffy looking barge on a wide canal. It is moored under a new looking yellow elevator. There is a gravel quarry, so we assume this is used to load gravel onto the barge. The barge is lower in the water at its stern, so part loaded?

Engineers train on the Welsh Highland Railway two weeks ago. A glorious day. Just south of Beddgelert.

I think the small locomotive is the Upnor Castle. It is pulling three wagons of different types, on a narrow gauge railway line. The line is in a wooded gorge. A man is watching the train. A small amount of blue sky is visible.

In praise of tubeless (for gravel). Must have picked this thorn up last week, hadn’t noticed it. This AM spotted it before a ride & decided I ought to pull it out. Put bike on a stand so I could spin the wheel around to help sealing (does it? Not certain!) & after a minute or so I was good to go!
