I do dislike the in-built obsolesce of modern things. Perfectly good laptop destined for the scrap heap because progressively cut off from various software through lack of updates to os. Let’s give this linux thing another try.

Great article. As a side note, someone needs to teach Graham Stringer MP some seismology. The Richter Scale is open-ended at both ends - so it’s impossible to be off the scale. M10+ earthquakes are theoretically possible, and at the other end, magnitudes just become increasingly negative.

Out reconnoitring this afternoon’s Campus Geology & History walk. This is the oldest identifiable historic feature, the quarry for stone for the original Elizabethan Keele Hall (c1580), later landscaped around 1840 as a very early example of quarry restoration. www.keele.ac.uk/peopleplanetplace/ ⚒️

I still have my stencils. Yes, kids, this is what we used to use to label diagrams before computers. Used to use a combination of these and Letraset dry transfer lettering.
If we are sharing old hand-drawn thin sections… From my undergraduate mapping report, Lukmanierpass, Switzerland, a thin section line drawing of a graphitic schist. Includes the lost art of lettering using stencils.

That’s a nice ring ditch you have there, it would be a shame if someone dug a powerline to a mobile phone mast through it. ⚒️🧪
So good to be outdoors supervising a GPR survey today, but why do I always get asked to do this stuff in winter rather than summer? Historic landscape with spectacular views across the region. No wonder our forebears venerated this place.
Enough is enough. That’s your lot, you emerald strigiform nemesis. Adiós para siempre, búho.

My suggestion is Charles Darwin, Geologist by Sandra Herbert. Also, for history of science rather than just geology, The Lunar Men by Jenny Uglow (18th C Birmingham, UK Lunar Society - rather than NASA)
Dark red Namurian Chatsworth Grit bleached yellow by fluids (probably hydrocarbons) flowing through fault zones. Harston Wood, Froghall Wharf, Staffordshire Moorlands. ⚒️
