July Nerdery Book Club, selected by Dave and discussed over mid Salvadoran fare at La Casita del Savor. Beautifully written & subtly addresses generational trauma, Danticat’s debut succumbs to a disappointing final act. Still, it’s very good. Joe: ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Dave: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ @weirdmusic657.bsky.social
Theme for July: silver anniversaries. It’s dizzying that these albums are a quarter century old. 🎙 (curated by me from our record collection) #thenerderyrecordecorating @weirdmusic657.bsky.social NB: Fever was released stateside in 2002, but I’m being true to its origins
Iconic moments at The Newbery/Caldecott/Legacy Awards with @erinentrada.bsky.social @jashar.bsky.social & @matthewburgessj.bsky.social My heart is full. What an amazing night, what inspiring authors & illustrators. So much laughter, so much joy.
Somehow I never posted: May Nerdery Book Club, selected by Dave and discussed over beer and (what else) hot dogs! Hilarious, gross, horny, and actually kinda heartwarming, Raw Dog is a brilliant fusion of travelogue, food blog, and memoir. Joe: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Dave: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ @weirdmusic657.bsky.social
June Nerdery Book Club, selected by me and discussed over leftover pizza from Primavera. Mawkish like a Hallmark movie but boasts sublime characterization. The foreshadowing is embarrassingly bad, yet the payoff affecting. Yay, octopuses! Joe: ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Dave: ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 @weirdmusic657.bsky.social
Theme for June: It’s Pride Month! 🎙 (curated by Dave from our record collection) #thenerderyrecordecorating @weirdmusic657.bsky.social
Theme for May: She returns! It’s been almost five years since her last record, and today Tori Amos’ new album releases. So here’s a display of her first four (and best) albums and her fifth best. 🎙 (curated by me from our record collection) #thenerderyrecordecorating @weirdmusic657.bsky.social
Last night was… April Nerdery Book Club, selected by me and discussed over mid bourbon cocktails and grub at Ironclad. Turns out this was more reference book than nonfiction. Still, the photos were beautiful & it made us nostalgic. Joe: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Dave: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ @weirdmusic657.bsky.social
You know those horror movies with creepy children, usually in Victorian garb, are lurking in shadows?
But Jesus Christ Almighty, it was way better than I ever expected. Bitter while also managing to be sweet, it probably isn’t for everyone…. but it hit the spot tonight. This is one I’d gladly eat again and again. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) 🧵 9/10 @weirdmusic657.bsky.social
Theme for April: Moving month! 🎙 (curated by Dave from our record collection) #thenerderyrecordecorating @weirdmusic657.bsky.social
March Nerdery Book Club, selected by Dave and discussed over seafood that’s served with plastic bibs. Stuffed with underdeveloped themes while being exhaustingly overwritten, the novel trundles along with little locomotion and almost no tension. Joe: ⭐️1/2 Dave: ⭐️1/2 @weirdmusic657.bsky.social
Theme for March: Signed, sealed, and delivered (pt.1) 🎙 (curated by me from our record collection) #thenerderyrecordecorating @weirdmusic657.bsky.social
February Nerdery Book Club, selected by Dave and discussed over lip-smacking good BBQ at Allman’s. Witty and unexpectedly moving, this novel’s strength lies in beautiful developed characters whose backstories provide surprising depth. Joe: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Dave: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 @weirdmusic657.bsky.social
I briefly met Rev Jesse Jackson in the fall of 1998 at a program run by (sponsored by?) the HRC in DC. This was a time before it was en vogue for politicians and visible figures to be aligned with the community. I admired him then and I honor him now. Thank you and rest in peace, Rev. Jackson.
To that end, this is all extremely one note… and that note is sweet. Very, very, very, very sweet. (⭐️⭐️) 🧵8/8 www.imdb.com/title/tt1271...

Paying tribute to Catherine O’Hara this weekend by watching this trio of Christopher Guest mockumentaries. I can’t believe she passed away today. Forever an icon. Rest in power, you beautiful and funny queen.
January Nerdery Book Club, selected by me and discussed over dinner food at the Mason-Dixon Cafe. Gut-wrenching and brutal but ingeniously crafted, this memoir is not for the faint of heart… but it is a richly rewarding read. Joe: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Dave: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 @weirdmusic657.bsky.social
And our marvelous winner, Cátia Chen, whose brilliant Fireworks is the book of my heart.
The Nerdery Movie Night #277: Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man & Strawberry Pop Tart Popcorn @weirdmusic657.bsky.social Dave: Even if the plot was intricately constructed and the characters were perfect for a mystery, the visual overproduction in Wake Up Dead Man was unforgivable. 🧵1/8
Theme for January: Joe’s favorite albums of 2025 (he only bought, like, 8 all year) 🎙 (curated by me from our record collection) #thenerderyrecordecorating @weirdmusic657.bsky.social 🧵1/3
December Nerdery Book Club, selected by Dave and discussed over a steak dinner at Fahrenheit 132. Beautifully written but ponderous, this meditative novel has lovely moments amidst some truly tedious stretches. Joe: ⭐️⭐️1/2 Dave: ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 @weirdmusic657.bsky.social
