Author, illustrator, award-winning journalist. Most recent book: I Ain’t Resisting: the City of Greensboro & the Killing of Marcus Smith (Scuppernong Editions, 2023). Loves vintage cinema, cats & my beautiful wife SuperAmanda.
I said fine, you’re the experts, hoping for something pre-Raphaelite-ish à la Barry Windsor-Smith or Jeffrey Catherine Jones, although I’d have been happy with Thomas Canty. The SF book DJ was far more commercial, although I wanted a younger, prettier & more Celtic Mordred.
The art department at Avon was proud of this, & of it being an actual woodcut. To me it looked like a Rosicrucians ad in a 1960s SF magazine.
I love Kay’s description of himself as a man broken by bookkeeping. This long paragraph (screenshot as two for easier reading) is, for me, up there with Merlyn’s advice to Arthur on “the best thing for being sad” in The Once and Future King.
John Crowley, December 1, 1942 ~ August 8, 2026. Fuck. What’s his story or novella in which the protagonist takes photos using an antique process? If I’m remembering correctly, it’s not SF or fantasy. @haszombiesinit.bsky.social, I want to share it w. my love @SuperAmanda.bsky.social
I’ve never seen it, but in 1964, Ferrer repeated the role of Cyrano, w. Jean-Pierre Cassel as D’Artagnan. It does not have a great reputation, despite being the last theatrical film directed by Abel Gance. Sylva Koscina & Daliah Lavi are the heroines. @superamanda.bsky.social
Whole point is that Quive-Smith is veddy British Nazi, just as in the 1938 novel & 1976 Peter O’Toole version w. Harold Pinter & Alastair Sim, where John Standing is sn even more British Quive-Smith. Plenty of British Nazis until 1940.
Talk-to-text insists on rendering “Mayor” as “Mahar,” the evil intelligent pterosaurs in #EdgarRiceBurroughs’ #Pellucidar novels (seen here in #Frazetta illustrations I loved as a kid). @SuperAmanda.bsky.social @PatrickZircher.bsky.social
Final Boss is great swordmaster William Hobbs, who choreographed Romeo & Juliet, Three Musketeers, The Duellists, Barry Lyndon, Excalibur, & much RSC Shakespeare #CaptainKronosVampireHunter #Svengoolie
Hendry didn’t return for 2nd season of #TheAvengers. Steed’s new partner was Honor Blackman’s Mrs. Cathy Gale, who in her first episodes, played scenes written for Hendry. She made the show a huge UK hit. #Svengoolie #CaptainKronosVampireHunter
#Svengoolie #CaptainKronosVampireHunter Ian Hendry was the original avenger on #TheAvengers. As Dr. David Keel, he sought to avenge the murder of his fiancée. To do so, he teams up w. the mysterious & possibly criminal Steed.
Name a lost, uncompleted or never-begun project by a favorite creator you really wish had happened. Barry Windsor Smith’s The Green Man, aka The Real Robin Hood, which he abandoned in 1975 because he was sick of comics. @superamanda.bsky.social @patrickzircher.bsky.social
Plot of #ItTheTerrorFromBeyondSpace seems inspired by two 1939 stories by A. E. Van Vogt, later incorporated into his 1950 novel Voyage of the Space Beagle. Van Vogt lived to sue #Alien & got $50,000 settlement. #TCMparty @SuperAmanda.bsky.social
For the 1953 BBC serial, writer Nigel Kneale & his future wife Judith Kerr (author of The Tiger Who Came to Tea) made the monster from a rubber glove, garden roots & moss. @SuperAmanda.bsky.social #QuatermassXperiment #TCMparty
The disturbingly organic-looking monster was made from tripe & sphincters (bung) from a nearby butcher shop. #QuatermassXperiment #TCMparty
Two years before Peter Cushing was Frankenstein & Christopher Lee his creation, Richard Wordsworth was Hammer’s first monster. Karloff-quality performance. #TCMparty #TheQuatermassXperiment
Category from a trivia game I once wrote and hosted. Identify the following literary characters who don’t resemble the actors who’ve played them. @superamanda.bsky.social @patrickzircher.bsky.social @jessnevins.bsky.social
Captain Billy’s Whiz Bang was first published in 1919. #TheMusicMan is set in 1912. #TCMparty @superamanda.bsky.social
Of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, these are the 15 whom historians are reasonably sure never enslaved anyone. Of the 1st dozen presidents, only John & John Quincy Adams never did. #TCMparty #1776movie
Franklin was right about the wild turkey. They are fearless and will kick your ass. Eagles generally only attack those who get near their nests. #1776movie #TCMparty @superamanda.bsky.social
The UK had an X rating long before the US did. All the early #Hammer horrors got it. #Victim was the first non-horror film to receive it. #TCMparty @superamanda.bsky.social @kellylink.bsky.social
1 reason #Victim got an X rating was that the most sadistic blackmailer, a violent, sneering homophobic Teddy Boy played by Derren Nesbitt, was deemed “so unsympathetic” that his homophobia “will be discredited.” So, because the villain was too evil. #TCMparty @Superamanda.bsky.social
Winterton also wrote as Andrew Garve. My father was a fan. When I read his paperback of The Long Short Cut, I was disappointed that it was nothing like what the cover promised. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lon... @superamanda.bsky.social

#AnneSheridan is a Nazi-killing badass in #EdgeOfDarkness. Flynn mostly operates as her spotter. #TCMparty @SuperAmanda.bsky.social @PatrickZircher.bsky.social
MacDonald’s short story is not as brilliant as Du Maurier’s novella “The Birds,” but predates it and is memorably nasty. It’s in this classic antho ghost-edited by Robert Arthur. It’s also in this paperback of 12 stories from the great baby-crusher hardcover. archive.org/details/alfr...
Novelization byline is pen name for mystery writer Phillip MacDonald. Many classic horror anthos include his “Our Feathered Friends.” #ForbiddenPlanet #TCMParty @SuperAmanda.bsky.social
In #ForbiddenPlanet the animals were originally meant to be psychic materializations Morbius created w. Krell superscience. So Adams doesn’t blast a real tiger & real critters aren’t blown up. @SuperAmanda.bsky.social #TCMparty
Some dudes on social media are upset about Genndy Tartakovsky’s upcoming #Conan the Barbarian animated series, because Tartakovsky depicts him as wearing earrings. Just as #Frazetta and #BarryWindsorSmith did.
