Last gamelan post for now - a quick note on a concert and album by the NCH Gamelan Orchestra, Dublin's professional gamelan group. secretpandablog.wordpress.com/2026/07/07/n... #gamelan

"The NCH Gamelan Orchestra is the professional gamelan orchestra operating out of the National Concert Hall. I like to think that they are the bloated late period prog rock version of gamelan while our group are the scrappy young punks, but in practice I suspect that they are The Clash and we are Dumpy’s Rusty Nuts. They played a concert on the evening after ours and I went along to it because I can’t get enough of the gamelan. They had a few pieces that they played gadhon style, which means they use a stripped down ensemble that is pretty much just the soft instruments (AKA the hard-to-play instruments, viz. the gambang (wooden xylophone like thing), the suling (flute), the rebab and other things people play if they think they’re great). The gadhon pieces included two that I have played in full line-ups, Ladrang Moncer and Ladrang Mugirahayu, but they were pretty much unrecognisable in this format. "

It is some kind of horrific giant millipede walking along beside the water on a beach. Its back is flattish but covered in little spikes. Its front part is coming towards us and it has two eyes, widely spaced on either side of a headlike protruberance, and some tentacles at the front that might double up as mouth parts.

I was reading about how sloth bears are very fierce and best avoided but it was illustrated by a picture of a two baby sloth bears riding on their mother's back and now I can't stop thinking about hugging sloth bears.

I think my favourite bit of the entire series was the Shamed By You English ad.

It is the kind of text heavy advertisement that used to appear in comic books of yore. At the top a serious looking guy holds his glasses, with the caption "Shamed by you English?" below which text reads "You can speak soon and write like a graduate college if me let you help for a day of 15 minutes". The ad continues with a rather ramshackle mode of English as the man in the picture (Dan Boleo "Director of Linguage Institute Method; authority on adult educating") outlines the benefits his method offers while fielding questions from an inquirer whose English is much better than his. Readers are invited to mail his institute for a free booklet entitled "Good How To Gain English Command". It's very funny and I would post a link to a complete transcript if there was one out there.

I started off looking like a character from an MR James story but by nightfall I had gone full Bloomsday.
