Family circumstances have made it very difficult to concentrate on reading lately but I have been able to take a deeper look at this. The author has given himself an immense challenge, covering 1000 years of history and social changes across an enormous stretch of territory but acquits himself well.
An American critic once suggested that Cowper’s poetic reputation has survived so well because of his contemporaries being Burns and Blake, one of whom was too easy to understand, the other too hard.
I bought this when it came out last year but have only just got round to reading it. I had got birded out😊 I am now immersed in a typically beautifully written and illuminating book, demonstrating what a gift privilege can be ,when its fruits can be so joyfully shared. The cover isn’t bad either.❤️
