This lovely book. Read it over breakfast and it steadied and softened my mood.
Now I’m excited. They also had a copy of Good Wives but I was too practical to buy it because I already had it as a part of my current Little Women copy.
It’ll actually be at a secondhand shop if they still have it. Saw it there last week.
July is Cancer month, which means feeds are flooded with positive messages about my sign. The nice thing is it reminds me of the truly best parts of me, even the world usually treats them as weak, silly or unncessary. Hoarding them for the rest of the year’s gaslighting.
Friend did this so I did too. My reading opinions tally of the year so far:
The other book was Yesteryear. Social media influencer? RW propagandist? White feminism? But I spent two nights ravening my way through that book and sleep walked through work for a week. What is these addictive books making a fool of me? It this middle age?
I have been made a fool of in the best way possible…for the second time this year. With a terrible title like this and that gawdawful cover, I should be embarrassed to be seen in public with this but I’ve been devouring this book all evening because I couldn’t stop to get home.
After the weekend I’ve had, it is oddly comforting to know that privileged people have always mouthed values for entertainment. Even Patrick effin Bateman waxes eloquent about racism and environmental issues. With sushi on the side.
In other news, tender coconut with naga chili. Get it before summer runs out.
‘Butter’ by Asako Yuzuki was a tradwife takedown and I called it that last year in a book club, only nobody knew what a tradwife was. Tradwives are an American RW phenomenon but the core idea of weaponising conservative femininity is not new.
Good morning! That’s a triple stack boiled egg sandwich, with onion, green peppercorns, rosemary, coriander on garlic bread with a splash of soy sauce. It should have been too much but it wasn’t. The Japanese food fiction I’ve been reading inspired me.
Fun fact: I once drew a grater. Funner fact: The model was a a baby grater that can’t be used to grate anything (not even babies).
Sorry, I meant Virgin. Strange that they leaned into exotic India but decided to call the imprint Virgin. That’s why I got confused.
I found this in a secondhand bookshop which may be the only places that keep books that fit my Mumbai shelves. I miss these covers too. The catch? The n-word shows up on page 16. There is no escaping reality even in the best of books.
I’ve learnt to read outdoors (not an easy task when you live in crowded, dusty, humid country where nobody will leave a lone woman alone).
This month I have tasted tender coconut with naga chilli ice cream at Natural’s and also tamarind ice cream at Apsara. This is tropical island summer’ing done right.
I just finished ‘Butter Honey Pig Bread’ by Francesca Ekwuyasi. I feel like I just finished a sumptuous meal that my system is still learning how to digest. African writers are so much more sumptuous than American writers. It’s also a wonderful queer read. Sometimes things just work out. #Books
