We share the dissent's view that the federal courts do not police curriculum. But we do police the First Amendment. And if the history of that Amendment tells us anything, it is that the government cannot forbid what it perceives as heresy.

My county is preparing to vote to place a ten commandments monument on our courthouse lawn. I hope people speak up at the meeting on Monday. I did my part early.

Discussion/Action: Approve Resolution for the acceptance and installation of a Ten Commandments Monument from the American History & Heritage Foundation, Inc ("AHHF"). The Monument will be placed on the lawn of the Historical 1893 Courthouse in a location approved by this Commissioners Court. AHHF will provide either funds to the County to cover setup and related expenses or directly pay for labor providing the same as approved by the Llano County Commissioners Court. The Ten Commandments Monument will be provided and installed at no cost to the County of
Llano, Texas. (BR)

Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
On Monday, our commissioners court will discuss/act to accept and install a display of the ten commandments on the courthouse lawn. I hope our elected officials will consider what impact this will have on all of our community members and vote no.
There's no shortage of opportunities in our community to view these commandments already. They are displayed in our public library, in every classroom in our public schools, or within your choice of several churches. There is no legitimate reason to have these displayed.
These are literal commandments, not general advice, from a single, locally dominant faith tradition. Their prominent, solitary display in our county seat of government sends a clear message, and it's not communicating our state motto of "Friendship." This monument will not deepen our individual elected officials' relationships with the Divine, and our government will not be providing anything valuable to our community.
Instead, I'm afraid it will serve as a divisive, performative affirmation to some and as a rebuke to others.
We have neighbors with differing faith traditions, as well as those who don't appreciate comingling of government and religion. I don't feel this monument is in this whole community's best interests. These neighbors will not benefit from seeing this display at the home of our local government where justice is available to all, not just those of one faith. Romans 12:16 advises us to "live in harmony with one another" Is this really what that looks like?
I encourage all my neighbors to contact our elected officials and make your opinions known on this matter, and I urge our commissioners court to give the culture wars a break and get back to governing.

While these budget cuts are awful, there is a lesson to be learned here. It was LOUD COMMUNITY SUPPORT that prevented these budgetary decisions from eliminating librarian staffing decisions from the equation. Austin ISD librarians, students, and parents showed up and it worked. Kudos!

While Tuesday's announcement made clear that the district plans to cut staff, which positions are at risk remains unclear. The district won't consider cutting counselor or librarian positions after a wave of community feedback advocating for those positions, Superintendent Matias Segura said Tuesday evening.

In 2024, only 50% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with the following statement:

“School libraries are places of voluntary inquiry and not required reading for students. School libraries should, therefore, have books and materials with a multitude of viewpoints and ideas. Removing books from library shelves because of disagreement with or disapproval of ideas or viewpoints within the books is wrong and violates the First Amendment rights of students.”
This year, that number rose to 74%. While six respondents strongly disagreed with that statement in 2024, this year, not a single candidate who answered the survey did.

Yes! If your district is proposing giving money to this company, maybe offer up this free solution and save your district thousands of dollars.

So now here’s the question: with ALA opening up their data, and it’s robust data that’s based in research and fact, why would anyone need a program like BookmarkED to ban books for them? It seems like it’s easy enough to simply search the database. The solution in search of a problem doesn’t need to do anything anymore, since the actual solution illuminates the problem.

Must read. EXCELLENT piece on the current legal state of affairs re: book censorship from @heykellyjensen.bsky.social and @sarahlamdan.bsky.social that ends with a plea from me for us all to fight like hell for our 1A rights vocally and at the ballot box. Kudos, y’all!

In our case’s en banc opinion, the majority concurred that recourse for disagreement with local censorship is the ability for the public to shape local policies at the ballot box. The Court wrote, “They [people] can speak out against (and vote against) policies and officials they disagree with.” This is more true now than ever, and it now remains one of our only real powers for recourse. Support of intellectual freedom and rejection of censorship should become “kitchen table issues” and decisions that guide voting choices as much as reproductive health and immigration. Citizens ultimately do have all the power here. We just have to wield it and determine what our public libraries will become. We have seen recent victories in elections, with citizens wising up to politicians who use fear of books to win votes and choosing an alternative candidate. We need more of this.
