My alternative is growing sprouts on my counter. Only my hands and tap water. Just finished a batch yesterday.

I grow some things outside, and I also grow sprouts in my kitchen. My husband puts them on sandwiches by the handful.

Same in NY. No single-use plastic bags at stores. Paper bags cost $0.05. We have a bag of reusable bags in the back of the car. Stores often have branded bags for a dollar. We've noticed a big drop in bags blowing in trees.

I planted the potatoes in a container with "windows" on the side. You can also get fabric bags for the purpose. A tomato plant is a good thing to put in the middle to go "up" with potatoes around the outside to go "down". Had currants growing up, loved them. Found some at a local farmers market.

I have outside stuff, too, but I didn't want to scare Calvin. Mostly asparagus, because it's easy to grow, and expensive at the store. Raspberries, peas, beans, chives, strawberries, rhubarb. I've even grown potatoes.

I grow sprouts on my counter. No bugs, no dirt, no weeding, just rinse them with cold water a couple of times a day.

Can't take the credit. I probably saw it in Real Simple one time. But, something that I came up with was mentioned in a contest about ways to reuse old cell phone cases.

From Real Simple Magazine: Winner - Sink Caddy - Because the camera lens hole doubles as a drain, a smartphone case is a great spot to rest a sponge, a bar of soap, or a scrub brush.
