This is why they want to replace endangered species protection with DNA libraries instead: they can pretend to preserve the species while simultaneously destroying the ecological communities to which they're integral.

That reasoning reflects a remarkably narrow interpretation of conservation. Modern ecology does not view landscapes as isolated collections of interesting objects. Ecosystems function as interconnected wholes. Wildlife migration corridors, watersheds, fragile desert soils, archaeological sites, fossil beds, and native vegetation all depend upon the integrity of the surrounding landscape. Preserving a single canyon while exposing the surrounding plateau to industrial development is much like protecting a single room inside a house while allowing the foundation beneath it to collapse.

In the late 1800s, loggers essentially clear cut the forests around the Tahoe Basin, using the timber to fortify the silver mines at Nevada’s Comstock Lode, forever altering the forest and the ecology. As the forest began to grow back, American land managers implemented a policy that snuffed out every fire on the landscape, setting Tahoe up for the overgrown and dense forests that are so fire-prone and dangerous today.

Germany’s Ramstein Air Base, along with bases involved in NATO’s nuclear deterrence mission, was surveilled in an operation designed to map allied vulnerabilities and probe for weaknesses in military-civilian decision-making, the IISS report said. Russia-linked ships, including vessels from its so-called “shadow fleet” of clandestine vessels, were used to launch drones as part of the Kremlin’s wider “unconventional war on Europe,” the report added. During the campaign, drones flew with “substantial impunity across European airspace — representing both a series of tactical successes for the Kremlin and a strategic failure of allied air defense,” IISS said.

There’s something the markets seem to understand, even when the administration won’t admit it: some places are too costly to touch. Not just financially — though the legal battles, the remote terrain, the reputational risk have all driven away every major oil company. Every major bank in the United States and Canada has adopted policies refusing to finance Arctic Refuge drilling. Global insurers have followed. Chevron and BP walked away from their Arctic leases — some paying millions of dollars to do so.
