Well that was probably the most violent thunderstorm that rolled through Asheville in recent history (besides of course Helene). Our backyard tree got struck by lightning. Took a timelapse of the sky. It was gnarly looking.

How cool is this satellite imagery from this afternoon? Storms erupt simultaneously over the Upstate of South Carolina and north Georgia while upper level winds blow sout to north sending extensive clouds decks northward over western NC and southeast TN.
I was able to take my drone over the beginning construction stage of the 26 Connector Wednesday afternoon. I think an aerial perspective is necessary to properly understand the breadth of the project.
Jun 30, 7:12 PM Severe thunderstorm in progress near the Arboretum South of Bent Creek. Numerous lightning strikes. Visibility on this stretch of 26 is likely zero. Deluge!

Asheville had 6 days in a row -- June 22 to 27, 2025 with high temps in the 90s; its longest such streak since 7 consecutive days in July 2020. Do you remember this from just last year? Next week we'll have a similar streak. Magnitude of the heat is still a question mark.

Hard to believe we're in a upper air shallow trough regime here across the Southeast. Yes we've seen some rain - 0.90" at my house since May 1 - but you'd think we would have been able to squeeze out some more. Now medium range is showing an upper ridge taking hold.
Rain was looking like a pretty certain scenario for WNC on Saturday morning but first the ECMWF and now the GFS is showing rain being shunted to the south.
Wind direction today determined downslope subsidence. I'm just trying to figure out how the subsidence gave way to square formations. Must be the topography.
