sometimes when I'm feeling a little down about my progress on Escape Velocity I take a look at the greybox sketch of a level and compare it to where it is now

I'm so fucking excited to finally show off how much the game's changed since this demo, it's really crazy to go back and play this when I see what I have now in the project file you don't even get the WEDGE or the new cel shading or the executive zones or anything (stamina isn't making the cut)

fun fact: the current version of escape velocity's first room exists in a weird void unique to it as well! I was testing some different ways to do geometry and to be quite honest I forget what the idea was here. but it sure is like that for one room and then never again

some map geometry from Escape Velocity, viewed from inside the unreal editor, with the camera positioned below the geometry to give a view contrasted by the sky. most of the map looks like you'd expect geometry to look like from out of bounds, but the first room has a huge black box around it.

thinking a little bit about this I don't think it changes things this is probably a completely incomprehensible diagram but like. if the spirals are allowed to continue outwards identically they'll hit exact opposite poles at the same time. this isn't good math but ehhh it's enough for me right now

in case you're wondering how it's going with Escape Velocity: I have these folders that have non-critical names. just for organization. Anyhow. uh. lately I just sorta blast out the right-feeling keys and continue. you can kinda see how things are degrading over time

This is the same pic as above, but Itzu does not have a loincloth-- he refuses clothes on principle.

Itzu and granite have a complicated relationship. Itzu is an unstable mess, unpredictable and shifting from day to day. If he lived in a modern era he might be considered bipolar or schizophrenic, but in the bronze-age setting he lives in people simply consider him either crazy or god-cursed. Tragically, on a good day, itzu is intelligent and well-reasoned-- but delusion and paranoia frequently overwhelm him and reduce his thoughts to incoherent noise.

Granite is forgiving and the longest-lasting friend Itzu has had. In several occasions one or the other of the pair has saved eachother from dangerous circumstances. The two make a fantastic pair and despite differences in situation find they have a lot to talk about and debate. Granite, for his part, is genuinely willing to consider Itzu's seemingly insane concepts (some of which are quite forward-thinking and centuries ahead of then-current philosophy), and Itzu appreciates this greatly.

In a few years, Granite, now exiled from the city, will start a revolution. Itzu, still remaining in the city but struggling greatly, will consider this his final betrayal and full vindication of his world view. In Itzu's mind, leaders and those who would lead others to their death are manipulators regardless of their intent to do good or change the world. As Granite becomes a champion and recruits various city-states to his cause, Itzu, now inconsolable, will fall into a life of violent crime and betrayal. As Granite and his army approaches Babylon, Itzu burns it from within. The two meet outside the city: One, a legendary hero, and the other, a true nightmare. Granite tries to talk Itzu out of his destructive path and in the process realizes how bad things have gone for him. He realizes that the only thing he can do, for the good of all, is to kill itzu. The two never stopped loving eachother.
