I'm not saying The Odyssey is bad, or that it would be better if it was more over-the-top and campy; I'm simply wondering about the instinct to feign and signal seriousness about what are ultimately unserious stories. Nolan's Odyssey is finely crafted and impressive but also stilted and maudlin relative to something like Wolfgang Peterson's Troy, which is goofy and stupid but also a good deal of fun. For all his vision and ambition, Nolan can often seem to have very little actual imagination. Be it clinging to the lucid, mostly plain dreamscape in Inception or the N64 video game level planets of Interstellar, Nolan likes to work low to the ground of what's possible in movies.

Still, it's pretty rich to act like this is the first ignorant rap record ever made. On top of the standard conservatism and respectability politics that always swell up around rap songs like this, there is an added layer that attaches when it's a woman rapper making one.

Here's the thing with Drake, and I mean this in the most objective, journalistic, impersonal, clear-eyed way: He is a loser. I don’t mean from a success standpoint, obviously. I mean that the essence of his personality is that of the dweeb, the dork, the loser. He is a mess of insecurities and sensitivity and grievances, and no amount of money or fame or strip club visits will change this. It is that loserdom that makes him flock to coolness shields like Future or 21 Savage, but it is also what attracts him to streamers like Akademiks or Adin Ross and rappers like Tory Lanez, kindred spirits in loserdom. It's that loser essence that gives these albums whatever pathos they achieve.

What does it mean to have organic popularity? The industry plant thing started out as a way to track what felt authentic against what didn't. But like anything else, it slowly morphed into a catchall term for "artist I don't like." Was Chance The Rapper an industry plant because he suddenly blew up after two mixtapes? Was Desiigner because he blew up after one song? Olivia Rodrigo was called an industry plant, Sabrina Carpenter was called one and a whole lot worse. Every female rapper gets accused of being one, which I'm sure is purely coincidence. Hell, Raury's whole career might've imploded because of so many claims of being a plant. It stops meaning anything after awhile, and even if it does mean something, the fact that people like the songs tends to win out in the end.

after extensive searching, this review is nowhere to be found online now. Thanks to corporate conglomeration and the collapse of the blog internet, I and many of my colleagues have seen our work erased or unfindable. On the one hand, I should be grateful that my misguided review is no longer around to pollute the waters. On the other, I think there's value in seeing the fallibility of critics through their in-the-moment takes on different subjects. While criticism can be an art, it is also a job, one that does not always allow you to sit with things long enough to produce your most considered opinions.

It only took three listens of ANTI for me to recognize it as a masterwork in mainstream pop songwriting—the perfect alchemy of Rihanna's detached cool and islander ethos with contemporary rap and pop production.

I want him to think it’s a staffer who fell asleep. I don’t want him to see his secretary of State sleeping on a couch and think, Oh, this guy is weak.”
