I coulda been a contender...
Back in the day, the anticipation of seeing the likes of Blue Velvet or Body Double at the flicks without revealing social media splurges or Kermode size plot spoilers was an unbridled joy, so I’ve purposely been living under a rock for a fortnight so I can walk into the backrooms completely blind..
“A very thin line to start the crime..who will be the first to volunteer?..”
The world was so much better when all we wanted was to be Bruce Lee..
Right!.while the cat’s away..lavish arthouse epics come out to play..
“Until our time has come..we’ll just keep spinning round the sun..” #5DebutAlbums9599
Although my general disposition is more ‘Wee Small Hours’ these days, it’s hard not to be enchanted & uplifted by ‘Swingin’ Lovers’ and Kevin Gray’s outstanding work on this majestic Tone Poet reissue ensures I shall now likely be playing this for at least forever..
Just House Of Love being the greatest group in the world in ‘88..
Starting my day with the sunset…still Weller’s best, for me, since the first four solo records..it just hangs together so well in a languid soulful space and even settles the unfinished business of the Style Council..and yes..there WERE some folk that wanted more..
A blistering debut fuelled with furious passion & some lock-tight, sinuous arrangements. Cut short by tragedy, the popular view is they had another great record in them but from the very first guitar scrape of In a Rut they always felt compulsively on the edge & ready to implode.. #5DebutAlbums7579
Ok, they might not win but I’d back ‘em to get past the bouncer at the awards bash.. #5DebutAlbums7579
..and if snappin’ your fingers in a skinny tie was your thing.. #5DebutAlbums7579
..and Buzzcocks were my Beatles, so there’s that.. #5DebutAlbums7579
Based upon its lofty position in my all-time top ten, (2nd) this is my very favourite #5DebutAlbums7579 ..
“Now here comes all night dedication..and I work at a radio station..”
Watched Shelby Oaks in the early hours so you don’t have to..on the plus side it serves up some pretty chilling found-footage fare as an opening gambit, but soon forgets quite what it wants to be..although it does pack the MOTHER of all jump scares partway through, so there’s that..
