I just read the 1818 version and it doesn’t seem to be in there, which is very interesting! The start of the chapter has this: "Clerval desired the intercourse of the men of genius and talent who flourished at this time" and I’ve taken a pic of the same section you mentioned, I hope! Here ‘tis
