Nevertheless, a recent cryo-EM structure of the postfusion SARS-CoV-2 S in a lipid bilayer membrane showed that the internal fusion peptide (iFP, residues 867–909) inserted into the membrane, whereas the bFP was not resolved. This observation appears to challenge the functional importance of bFP but also indicates that additional analysis of the fusion peptide and fusion mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 S is warranted."
