I think @adamtooze.bsky.social is right in saying that it resembles the pre-WWI arms race much more than the Cold War one

Well, imagine if Verner von Braun had been in charge of his own nuclear-tipped rocket program, after all, not very far away from that reality. And he was competing with four or five other similarly wired individuals to control the destiny of humanity in terms of this technology. And that's how bonkers our situation is, right?

And if Al is a nuclear analogous arms race, the terrifying thing about it is that we're back in the world of Ruhlvern, we're back in the world of Krupp and Armstrong, we're back in the world of late 19th century military industrialism, a British naval manufacturer would just sell a cruiser to a Latin American state largely without government control.
And we're kind of back in that space of private unfettered oligarchic but global arms race, where the Pentagon will suddenly realize that, oh, God, anthropocles got something there that's potentially lethal. That's a manifest threat of aggressive cyber warfare at the largest scale.
