Hal is upon us... 25 year late (Space Odyssey 2001), but just as scary in real life, if not more so. I don't recall that film covering the ecological and social nightmare of AI on the ground
Distraught that Canada is talking about building new oil pipelines when climate-induced wildfires are causing us to have to suffer through the worst air quality in the world right now. Pumping more oil is a terrible idea.
whoo hoo! just sent off the ms for the 4th edn of my book Food (Polity press) - major effort plus new chapter on digitalization... keep an eye out for it in 2027! Major thanks to all those who helped me along the way w/ this and previous editions !! ❤️ Curious about what the new cover will look like!
It applies in soccer just as it does an international relations. When the rules of the game are no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the system is at stake and credibility is undermined. It’s the same person disregarding rules in both contexts. That’s who deserves a red card.
Fruit and Veg prices soaring in the US...Rising energy costs due to the war on Iran are having a big impact on food prices - not just production costs, but transportation, cold chain, retail, etc. www.ft.com/content/f27a...
Hyper concentrated markets bring trouble: FT reports that the recent US stock market gains (turbocharged by the conflict in the Middle East) are driven by smallest number of stocks on record (mostly Big Tech stocks) - increasing risk of a sharp drop when the bubble pops www.ft.com/content/7599...
Maybe it's just me, but I think one could read this two ways.... I wonder of their advertising team considered both interpretations?
Can history help us to understand Trump’s protectionism? Check out Eric Helleiner's new paper on whether historical comparisons can fully capture the nature Trumpian protectionism and what that means for understanding this current moment. www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/documents/60...
@charlieangus104.bsky.social in Broadview on fascism: Canada stands up and don't forget the power of the boycott (and another reason we need to support 100% Canadian food supply chains).
Good grief. Trump can't stand that Carney gave a powerful and widely lauded speech yesterday.
Excited to be attending the ORFC in January! I'll be speaking on Titans of Industrial Agriculture as well as on panels on plastics in food systems, digital agtech, and ag trade in the new geopolitical landscape. Really looking forward to the conference! Program here: orfc.org.uk/orfc-2026-in...
I wasn't really looking for another reason to dislike Larry Summers (there are already so many) but there it is.

New US mandate for more biofuels from domestic sources + higher oil prices due to conflict = higher US soybean prices. Is this how the US is seeking to reverse the price differential between US and Brazilian soy due to China shifting to buy more Brazilian soybeans? www.ft.com/content/0997...
From the FT: Global coal use is up and new projects are in the pipeline... For anyone concerned about #climatechange, this story will make you lose sleep www.ft.com/content/f6cc...
Sun through smoky haze in Ontario yesterday evening. Felt apocalyptic. This is what #climatechange has in store for us...
www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... Happy to share this new article just published in Food Policy journal! We show that concentrated corporate power matters for people's agency within food systems. Open access! Highlights and abstract below
Canada ranks 10th in terms of US trade deficits with its trading partners Meanwhile, Canada is the biggest export market for US goods and services ...and Trump chooses to pick on Canada... See Jim Stanford's updated data on Canada-US trade here: www.progressive-economics.ca/2025/05/late...

Waterloo went Liberal - I think there might be a mistake on the table...
Was happy to speak with Jeremy at Eat this Podcast last week - episode out now. Thanks so much for the opportunity to talk about the rise of corporate power in the agricultural inputs sector and its wider consequences. (It's been a busy few weeks with podcasts!) www.eatthispodcast.com/titans/
Reminder of global economic (& ecological) impact of US tariffs - deepening shift to S. America as a major ag commodity exporter as countries scramble to buy from anywhere but the US; already a premium on Brazilian soybeans; deforestation and ag chem use likely to rise. www.ft.com/content/3b10...
Striking visual of US import reliance on goods made in China. Buckle up, Americans, prices are about to rise on many items! www.ft.com/content/ec96...
US Dollar is down, Stock markets are down, Commodities are down. Hard to see how this is 'liberating.' Sounds like a recession in the making to me...
So nice to see this article with Eric Helleiner on history and theory of green finance finally published! It's part of a special issue in Competition and Change on the IPE of Green Finance edited by Sarah E. Sharma and @mbabic.bsky.social Abstract & link ⬇️ journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
What a fun book launch for Titans of Industrial Agriculture yesterday at @balsillieschool.bsky.social! Thank you to panelists @eatingpolitics.bsky.social (Sarah Martin), Anastasia Papadopoulos, and Bruce Muirhead for excellent commentary following my talk. Thanks also to those who attended!
Why Canada isn't having the same bird flu/egg price crisis as US: Avg size of Canada's egg farms ~ 23,000 hens Avg size of American egg farms ~ 50,000 to 6 million hens Canadian supply management = more livelihoods, keeps prices stable, and is safer. www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/pe...
