Behind the cold front, a denser, subsiding air mass will allow thick concentrations of smoke particulate matter aloft to sink to the surface rapidly reducing air quality. The surface-based smoke plume will likely reach our I-80 counties near and before sunrise, then slowly move south toward the Pittsburgh metro between 12-6pm and continue south toward Northern WV between 6pm-midnight. Visibility will be reduced similar to the way it is when it is foggy, except the particulate matter in the air will be much more unhealthy and potentially hazardous since it is the remnants of matter from wildfires. Looking at some of our downstream air quality sensors in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota-concentrations of smoke particulate matter are 3-4x higher than what was observed in the Summer 2023 smoke episode. This has resulted in Air Quality Indices to range between 400-900+ which is exceptionally
high-registering as code purple and burgundy air quality.

Some of this particulate matter will disperse and the concentrations of smoke will decrease some as the plume moves toward our area per high-resolution modeling. However, values look to remain still at very high levels, potentially rivaling and exceeding the late June 2023 event.
I could easily see a widespread code red-purple event across Western PA by Thursday night and Friday. If air quality becomes hazardous, it is strongly encouraged to wear a cloth mask or respirator if you have to be outdoors. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged and the use of portable air cleaners and changing of air filters is recommended by the CDC.
Smoke concentrations will decrease by Saturday
as surface winds shift to the west/southwest ahead of a shortwave that will bring storm chances. Severe storms are possible along with locally heavy rainfall and flash flooding during the evening hours.

So far, an old rubbermaid bendy-ish storage bin lid is the most popular water source, by far. i put a few stones under 1 corner to deepen the pool on the opposite side so birds can bathe. my groundhog drinks from it, & the squirrels are even coming down to drink. the mister keeps it full & cold, too

**INCOMING CANADIAN WILDFIRE SMOKE***
Heads Up—A wildfire outbreak that began in western Ontario recently due to some lightning strikes is sending thick plumes of smoke southeast into the U.S. The steering winds around the periphery of an upper level high or heat dome across the Great Plains are going to direct smoke toward the Great Lakes State and Northeast over the next several days.
While the smoke will remain aloft through the next 24-30 hours, a weak surface cold front moving in from the north Wednesday night into Thursday morning will allow for sinking air behind the boundary. This will lead to smoke mixing down to the surface and potentially creating very unhealthy to potentially hazardous air quality across Western PA and multiple surrounding states. Be advised in the next few days.

Don't think I was being patronizing, just sympathizing with the feeling of realizing our minds play tricks on us sometimes when we don't want to give up believing we were right about something when evidence shows up to suggest we might be wrong. It's an uneasy queasy feeling for anybody to have.
