Thrilled to announce that I’ve achieved my dream of owning a TOTO bidet. Installing this was hardwork. At 36, my back cannot withstand much pressure but I persevered. I’m proud of myself for taking this leap! If you work hard enough, you too can have clean butts in this explosive diarrhea outbreak!
Also being part of this team was a truly wild and amazing experience. Scholars who wrote some of the foundational books/ articles on Asian Americans wanna hear what I think??!! Truly humbling to be in presence of greatness
Another striking finding is that AAPIs are also the least likely group to be in spaces with other racial ingroups/ co-ethnics. As 1 of only 2 Asian American tenure track faculty in my dept and often the only POC in various committees, I understand this all too well Anyway check out the full report!
One of my favorite findings from the report is that AAPI communities strongly support DEI efforts, even when AAPIs don't think they would benefit from DEI efforts personally (in full report). This aligns with my work showing underestimation of Asians' support for affirmative action
Celebrated the last day of Spring semester by waiting in line for the legendary Kasama pastries! The top ones are black truffle croissants and the bottom two are ube huckleberry basque cake. Anyway I’m ignoring various academic discourses with food pics. I hope everyone can try Kasama at some point!
Major congrats to the amazing @estherlindstrom.bsky.social for a TEN MILLION 💰 grant in this economy!!!!!! Soooo proud of you!!! Glad we started at UIC together. Thanks for being such a badass inspiration! today.uic.edu/uic-research...
Starting another application for the same prestigious foundation that’s rejected me thrice now
Wait which Q?? This Q scene is so iconic for me, I went to that museum just to see that painting 🤣😅 Happy birthday! And that cake looks amazing!
For all Southeast Asian social-personality psychologists attending #SPSP2026, we are doing an informal meetup on Thurs 2/26, 7pm at Arc Bar (in the Hyatt next to convention center). Come meet new friends, connect with other SE Asians, and hang out!!
Finally caught sight of a Straw Hat Pirates’ Jolly Roger in the Chicago wild 🏴☠️ From Nepal to Indonesia to USA, we are out here protesting corruption and authoritarianism. I know we are on the right side of history!
Preparing my midtenure review and this is very humbling hahaha at least they can't say I didn't try 😂 7th year on the tenure track (clock turned back when I moved to UIC) and I guess I'll keep running on this track for a while...
Gave a talk yesterday and someone asked me why the Model Minority Myth is called a myth. I stumbled over my response because in my head, all I could think about was “Model Minority MM, flip it around, WICKED WITCHHHHH.” It took everything in me not to make this joke out loud…
I’m reviewing some amazing PhD applications for my lab and I just hope they know what they’re getting themselves into, especially the Californians 😂 🥶
Drawing across disciplines, I argue that Asian Americans (and their stereotypes) are directly contrasted against Black people. Instead of seeing Asian as between White and Black people in racial hierarchy, I propose it is better to see Asian as polar opposites of Black people. This centers Whiteness
On election day, I wanna announce that I am recruiting social psych PhD students for my lab at UIC. My lab focuses on racial identities (esp Asian, Latino, MENA Americans) and intra-minority conflict/ coalition. So please tell your students to pick me! All details on my website: www.pbandjlab.com
A PI is never wrong. Nor is he right. He edits precisely what he means to.
FB reminded me that 10 years ago today, I sat through a 9am Friday morning talk on why Inside Out was an egregious affront to affective science. Coincidentally we also discussed emotion and culture in my grad seminar this week. My students got a taste of my Northeastern affective science training 🤪
Working on yet another grant for the same private foundation that’s rejected me several times already
The Asian trope of quiet, demure, model minority is so wrong because we are literally out here drumming, screaming, dancing, protesting all the time. We are loud AF.
An amazing sign at the 🧊 protest in Chicago today! We do not want nazis and 🧊 in our communities!! I love Chicago so much! Fuck 🧊
