Unjust society is unsustainable -> democracy is non-negotiable. Sustainability transition & modeling circular economy @ Finnish Environmental Institute (Syke) as a profession; defence of Finland and democracy as a hobby.
It is a bit of a shame that the 1920s-1930s Academic Karelia Society was a bunch of ultranationalist nutcases, because their coat of arms kind of slaps
If you ever visit Finland, don’t miss the greatest sight of the city of Kurikka: the “piss stone” behind which Swedish king Adolf Frederick supposedly relieved himself on July 18, 1752. The local tradition is that the Queen also relieved herself, but historians have debunked this part of the story.
Simo Häyhä was about 157 cm tall; don’t see anyone complaining about his lack of lethality.
They also had this wind up submachine gun. (It was used in training because blank rounds cost money. It makes a rat-tat-tat sound when cranked.)
Visited the Finnish Border Guard museum. Besides Cesar, the first border guard dog (he’s pining for the fjords here), I saw a pretty cool 1960 educational film teaching ranger skills in winter. Sadly, only in Finnish. (There’s another for summer skills too!) elonet.finna.fi/Record/kavi....
A statistic to illustrate the intensity of 1944 battles where Finns stopped the Soviet steamroller: The highest recorded Soviet artillery concentration amounted to 30 000 shells per hour per hectare. For comparison, peak Russian artillery use in 2022 was about 60 000 shells. Per day. Total.
The mine, designated PM16 in Finnish service, has been developed and is almost entirely manufactured in Finland. Its sophisticated sensors let the onboard computer to be programmed to discriminate between different targets and e.g. go dormant for winter to save batteries. Optimum sea depth 20-70 m.

Meanwhile, Russian innovation (It is fucked up that we have to be afraid of these people. Slit Russia into smaller states!)
The funniest thing in Finland right now: reactions to pics of the corpse of #Iran's ayatollah transported in a former "K" grocery chain's delivery truck. Not the first time their branding attracted international attention. The logo on the right was used from 1998 to 2014.
Communism was just as bad as capitalists claimed, and capitalism is just as bas as communists claimed. (Social #democracy FTW)
