The last notes of the song faded away. Around them, the murmuring swelled into a crescendo.

Jimin’s hand still rested motionless on his waist.

"My alpha wanted it this way," Jimin replied softly.

The music fell completely silent. A brief pause before the musicians launched into a new song.

Jimin took a step back, his hand releasing Jungkook’s waist. Something flitted across his face—surprise at himself, perhaps.

"Thank you, Jungkook," he said, and then he turned and walked back to the pack alphas, back to his pavilion where his parents were sitting, watching them with interest. Jungkook looked at his parents, the unease having fallen from their faces at least.

Jungkook stood in the middle of the clearing. Hoseok wrapped his arms around him with a grin, spinning him around, but his whisper in his ear was worried.

"Are you okay? Why are you making such a face? Did he say something upsetting?"

Seokjin bowed somewhere amid enthusiastic applause, then starting to sing to the new melody. Other people flooded the clearing, dancing to the tune. Their laughter rang in his ears.

Jimin's scent was fading, so close and now so distant.

Jungkook wrapped his arms around Hoseok, pulling him close. He breathed in the soothing scent of azalea, the morning dew on grass.

My alpha wanted it this way.

Jungkook adjusted his stance again and felt the weight distribution in his legs and torso change. The humming of the sword grew more intense.

Their eyes met for a brief moment before Jungkook turned his attention back to Yoongi. That was the problem lately—too many distractions. Too many thoughts about freckles and dragon eyes and the way Jimin had touched his face in the glow of the fire.

“Focus,” Yoongi said sharply, and Jungkook realized he had lost his concentration again.

“Sorry,” he muttered.

Hoseok laughed, not unkindly. “Someone's distracted. I wonder why.” His knowing grin made Jungkook's ears burn.

Summary:
