I thought we had finally made it through a storm without losing any trees. But when I walked my dog last night, I saw another had come down (they got it taken out fast!) For those keeping score, that's 5 trees down within a 3 building radius of my place this summer
These storms in Chicago today are dumping so much rain they've overwhelmed the gutters and the water is pouring off the roof in a solid sheet
Half the world is on fire while the other is submerged in flood waters, and the capitalism machine marches on I think a lot about how terrified we were of the ozone hole in the 80s, and how the world united to fix it. And I wonder just how much more tragedy has to happen before we do the same now
Eightfold uses scraped data on real people and whether or not they've been successful in their careers to determine the probability that you will also be successful But research has shown that there are huge biases built into our hiring practices that favor white men over all others
Have you heard of Eightfold AI? According to a lawsuit, if you applied for a job at a major corporation - like LG, Bayer, CITI, or HP - Eightfold has scraped internet data to score your potential success from 0 to 5 You're rejected from a job based on a secret algorithm and data you didn't submit
Chicago's air quality drastically deteriorated today. At 1:00, the AQI was 338. Now it's 651, with PM2.5 levels > 80 times the WHO guideline We've had record breaking tornadoes, a deadly heatwave, near-record rainfall, and now the worst air in the world Ignoring climate change is dangerous
Even if you're the most capitalistic capitalist that ever capitalismed, surely burning the world down is a bad thing? Some businesses in Chicago are closing because of the poor air quality
The fires feel like they're everywhere & they're only going to get worse Ontario. Colorado. Spain. Kilarney. Algeria. Fontainebleau Before I even stepped outside in Chicago, I woke up completely congested with watering eyes. I wore an N95 mask to water my plants - didn't help, my throat is burning
Fireworks will be like this for many, many hours. My phone doesn't even pick up sound very well- it's so much louder in person Currently dying of heat in my closet - had to close the doors to block out more of the noise
Trees keep urban areas cooler - you can see the light areas on the tree canopy map (low % canopy coverage) have a correlation with the highest heat island effect areas Climate change doesn't just bring heatwaves - we're also getting more intense storms, taking the trees we need to manage the heat
Chicago is out of the heat dome and back in the apocalyptic thunderstorm zone. This is the 4th tree down on my block in the past month
RIP to my electricty bill The sun is set and the feels-like temp is still triple digits in Chicago I have my AC set to 79 - my dog starts plotting my demise if I let it hit 80 - and it has been running nonstop for hours
Got the text about "retiring" my plan yesterday. The plan that T-Mobile promised would never see a price increase. Guess they got around that by eliminating the plan. Shady AF And now I get to waste time trying to talk to a human because T-Mobile's contact options all start with "AI" agents
I have a rooftop garden and I got up extra early to water - at 7 this morning, it was already almost 80. And the humidity is 89% There's a breeze and it's not bad in the shade (yet) - but just standing there holding a hose, I was already drenched in sweat This afternoon will be brutal
Absolutely dreading the next few days. It's going to be especially rough because we're just coming out of temps in the 60s You'd think that so much of the world suffering extreme heatwaves would be a wakeup call, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Because it will be too hot to Stay safe, Chicago
They've arrested more than 700 Palestine supporters Meanwhile, only 16 Belfast pogrom rioters have been arrested. Masked gangs set up checkpoints where they demanded to see IDs. Multiple reports claim that police advised healthcare workers to comply with the gangs The UK gov's priorities are clear
Time for round 2, Chicago I don't think I've ever gotten an emergency cell phone notification for a thunderstorm. Stay safe, everyone!
From Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation 5,000 is a lot - poor trees They're finally out working on the tree that trapped a power line on top of a MINI Cooper - they've got a big truck with a crane attachment, pretty cool to watch
I guess we did end up losing power at some point last night? Got this message from ComEd at 3 am. Have power now though and all my clocks have the right time, so maybe not. Trees are still in the road and are the new local tourist destination
I didn't notice it before, but there's a powerline trapped under my neighbor's tree on top of the MINI Cooper - it's amazing we all have power Also, streets and san. did not come clear the trees when they finished with the tree a couple blocks away. All 3 trees are still down and road is blocked x2
My neighborhood is a tree graveyard. My neighbor said she heard tomorrow's storm is supposed to be even worse, so hopefully there's not much left to fall *knocks on wood, which is now plentiful*
A couple blocks away, another tree almost completely blocked the street, I was just able to get around it when I picked up Plume (my dog) from daycare I will say that streets and sanitation got out here pretty quick - they had already removed some other downed trees
There are 3 downed/split trees within 2 doors of me. This is actually 2 that fell across the street from each other, criss-crossing
The trees behind my balcony are not having a great time right now
This storm hitting Chicago right now is no joke. My neighbor's linden tree just snapped at the base and there's another tree down across the street. Stay/get inside if you can
I don't know why they even bother trying to forecast the weather in Chicago First pic was tue 7 day forecast from this morning. Second pic is from this afternoon. I'm sure it will change again by tonight
Americans have been inundated with decades of propaganda designed to make us doubt whether climate change is real (scientists first warned the President about the dangers of climate change more than 60 years ago)
