Lovechild of the Rust Belt & Appalachia. Reprobate reader. Rogue writer. Blow up the Data Centers. This is a no AI Zone.

1/ Every year, I post my favorite reads of the year & , as we are a little past the half-way mark for this year, here are my favorite reads of 2026 so far. (These are not necessarily books which were released in 2026, although some of them are.)
I'm just about finished with "The Emilys" by Heather Abel. My lord. This is a fantastic book.
Hey @pbs.org, first off, love you and all you do. Second, now might be a good time to re-broadcast the "Poison Squad" episode of The American Experience. Thanks!
My standards are so different now. Are you a human person floundering about trying to make something and sometimes failing? I'm all in. Are you a perfectly structured machine fabricated book? Fuck off.
Everybody else has a podcast, so I'm thinking about starting one called, simply, "What the fuck is wrong with people?" because, honestly, aren't we all having that conversation constantly? Enjoy this photo of a very silly cat who also wants to know what the fuck is wrong with people.
You know who else maligned carbs (pasta, especially) to push protein, protein, protein? Mussolini. He and RFK and all the MAHA dinks would get along just swell. In the meantime, enjoy this photo taken while hiking in Italy (in Umbria -- and you can see why Appalachia suits me just fine.)
Sometimes, I just need to listen to 'Purple Rain' and have big feelings. #Prince #PurpleRain
If you write an email to me using AI, then I have AI read it & respond, your AI responds to my AI, then my AI responds to your AI, we're on the Cream of Wheat Box upsidedown. AI makes everyone exponentially stupider. Enjoy this photo of my favorite bar where I hang out with actual humans.
Today would be a good day to say, I will never surrender to AI. Enjoy this (somewhat fuzzy) photo of black and white crows, or hoodie crows, taken in Ravenna, Italy. #DeathToAI #FuckAI
Here's a thing I know. Pope Leo knows more Catholic theology than I do. But I sure as shit know more than ole JD does. Enjoy this photo of the Highland Park Bridge. #JDVance #FakeCatholic #PopeLeo
Today would be a good day to tell Governor Shapiro that we don't want any soul-killing data centers in the Commonwealth. Enjoy this photo of a duck on the banks of the Allegheny River. #FreedomFromTech #KillAI
What do you get when you mix a Trashcan president with good old fashioned nazism? Trashists. Enjoy the Trashism, America! #Trashism #Trump #GarbageCan
Today would be a good day to stop the building of a heinous data center in Rachel Carson's hometown. (Rachel Carson, FFS!) #killthedatacenters Enjoy this photo of a hiking trip in Spain several years ago.
I often see big ole groundhogs on the trail where I jog, but yesterday, I saw two youngins. That was a first. I managed to stop and grab a couple of photos before they took off.
It's a fucking mess. I'll just be over here crying about what we are losing and for no good reasons at all.
Guys, there's so much going on in the world and I know you're all busy, but I don't think we hate on Zuckerman nearly enough. And I know we can do better. #FuckZuck #Zuckerman
Gonna be eating so many good beans. Yinz should be jealous. @ranchogordo.bsky.social
> The Longest Silence, Thomas McGuane > The Hill, Harriet Clark > Born in Flames, Bench Ansfield > Meditations in an Emergency, Frank O'Hara > Stronghold, Tucker Malarkey > The Emilys, Heather Abel > John of John, Douglas Stuart > Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison (this is an overdue re-read)
Most of the reading I've done in the last years has related to my work as an #Appalachian / #RustBelt writer & researcher. Truly, no complaints. Zero. But this summer, I've got several weeks away planned & I've declared a Fiesta of Reading Whatever the Fuck I Want To. As follows:
"It isn't a crime to party with Mr. Epstein" says Todd Blanche. Anybody who partied with Epstein, at a bare minimum, exercised TERRIBLE judgment and I would not trust their judgment with regard to anything, let alone governance. In short, piss off #ToddBlanche Do enjoy the photo of artichokes.
Let's all be more like the Albanians. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/j...
Anybody who is both anti-vax and pro-data center is, by definition, pro-death. MAGA is a death cult. Do enjoy this photo from one of the many beautiful markets in Athens.
