Proud dad, lucky husband, an existentialist historian of the 18th-century Atlantic, laughing as I go. Author of “The Execution of Admiral John Byng as a Microhistory of Eighteenth-Century Britain” (2021)
This brilliant book by David Parrish adds to your point. Jacobitism played an enormous role in colonial politics, religious outlooks, and cultural developments in colonial North America and the Caribbean. #Skystorians #EarlyModern #18thc
FYI 🗃️ In 1755, John Colcroft wrote to Lord Ilchester (Stephen Fox, the older brother of Henry Fox) predicting stock market fluctuations based on the anticipated war with France (the Seven Years' War). ADD MS 51349, f. 21 I reckon some things have continuity with the uber wealthy.
Hehehe, like, “what the heck is this tool?” - endless hours of fun tracking down the answer
Old Town in Yreka, California. Surprisingly delightful, good coffee/book store, fantastic antique store call the Foundry.
CLEANSING POST!!! The Suncrest heirloom, red flesh instead of yellow for crafting jams and compote.
A placard at the entrance of the British Library circa 2015 supplied a quote from the 1957 Wolfenden Report. At its core, the report stated that same-sex consenting adults ought not be a crime. Today it stands yet as a bulwark of a government’s role in society. #Skystorians

In a Scott’s Valley coffee shop and struck by these racks. I mean, nice . . . but . . . who would pick up a book or a magazine when the mighty mobile phones are at hand? Literally. #DepthsOfOurCulture
What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to give it away? Pope Leo XIV sums it up by focusing on the obsession with Artificial Intelligence.
At my college, we welcomed war veterans from Ukraine. 🇺🇦 They were here to learn about our Working Lands project of which I’m the director. One of them gave me patches of his unit and this other 😅
🧵On May 6th, 1756, King George II received official confirmation from the Mediterranean that French transports landed 15,000 troops at Citadella, Minorca, on 18 April. That info was leaked to the press that day, likely by the 2nd Viscount Duncannon, William Ponsonby. #NavalHistory
The 15th Amendment was the last of a trio that attempted to ensure a citizen’s right to vote. A case can be made the gerrymandering infringes upon that right. But that would be folly with this Chief Roberts SCOTUS. A new Amendment making gerrymandering illegal would have a better chance. IMO
Here’s a poem I wrote a couple of months ago that discusses this very bit of news
Announcing that our talented, brilliant, and world traveling daughter, Matilda (seen her absorbing Jori’s beauty), has accepted the University of Oregon’s (Go, Ducks!) offer for postgraduate work towards a PhD in Environmental Science, Studies, and Policy. Her adventure in Eugene begins in September
“…the readiness of the U.S. to tell others what they ought to do, while doing little or nothing itself … had long been one of its less endearing characteristics in the eyes of other nations.” Ernest Bevin (1946)
What if we’re all just student drivers in the great blessings of our Earth?
Reading the Wall Street Journal’s ten items Iran pushed to get to a two week negotiable peace - which the Trump administration agreed to - only reminds me of this: “War. What is it good for?” Edwin Starr (1970
