In January, my wife & I spent a lovely day in Montmartre just as it got hit by a huge snowstorm. I've never been a big travel guy, but watching Parisian school children pelt each other with snowballs and people slide down icy streets fundamentally rewired me. It was magical. Still thinking about it.

I was at the AGO earlier looking at Tom Thomson paintings and some kids walked by and complained that Canadian art is just trees and like yeah true but is there any more worthwhile subject, what's so great and special about anything else

Today on a visit to Pere-Lachaise cemetery in Paris, I learned that Paris not only has wild parakeets but they all seem to have originated from two incidents of pet parakeets escaping from the airport and that is extremely wild.

It's pretty wild how much this album cover now just looks like a Gen Z bedroom pop album thumbnail on SoundCloud or something. The camera's not even much of a giveaway since it looks so aesthetically retro. Like I think you could trick a few people with this.

10. Absolute Batman This is not a comic book run that I expected to like, but something about how far it goes into being ridiculous and how unafraid it is to be dumb ended up appealing to me a lot. Honestly that's a theme with a lot of the stuff I loved this year.

9. viagr aboys - Viagra Boys One of the best things about 2025 is that rock music is back and it's allowed to be extremely weird again. I did not expect to like this at all and came out loving it.

8. Tiny Bookshop A very sweet cozy game with a deceptively compelling core loop. I hate when they do the little animation that says they didn't like the book I recommended. I love when they do the little animation that means they liked it. That's the power of Video Games.

7. Ghost of Yotei Elegant is really the word for everything this game does well. Like its predecessor, it solves so many of the annoying little problems of open world games and just feels really good to play.

6. Weapons I can't separate this movie from the experience of seeing it with a first weekend audience that went absolutely nuts at all the right places - laughing, screaming, freaking the fuck out. I appreciate watching a movie play an audience like a piano and this movie did that extremely well.

4. Avowed As a Pillars of Eternity enjoyer, it was fun to see the world of Eora translated to 3D, but mostly I loved this as a great example of a game that knew what it was, stuck to its strengths, and didn't wear out its welcome.

3. Dispatch The Telltale model perfected. Every week while this was rolling out felt fun and special and I missed it immediately when it was finished. I could play a whole game of just that dispatching mini-game and the writing's better than any streaming series I watched this year.

1. Old Skies Profoundly beautiful meditation on time and identity with fun puzzles and laugh out loud jokes. Somehow manages to pull off a point and click level centered around 9/11 that not only avoids being awful and cringeworthy but is actually extremely moving and smartly done.
