Microsoft wants your feedback - and they certainly are getting it in this thread about migrating from Project for the Web to Microsoft Planner. Copilot for Pottery actually sounds like a better idea than 90% of what MS has done with their Planner strategy so far.

"I just created a new project and Planner emailed EVERYONE IN MY DIVISION to let them know. But Microsoft Planner, unlike Project or Asana or Monday or any of its rivals, does not allow for import of tasks from Excel or other platforms, so Planner just emailed EVERYONE IN MY DIVISION to show them an empty task sheet. Perhaps instead of software, Microsoft could get into basket weaving or pottery or something that provides actual value for the world? "

Microsoft reported a 25% YoY growth in emissions in its new Environmental Sustainability Report. blogs.microsoft.com/on-the-issue... But that's FY25 data - meaning from one year ago. So, I took the new GPT-5.6 Sol for a spin and asked it to estimate what the FY26 (=now) emissions might look like:

IMO, the worrying signal is not that FY25 rose 25%. That number is contaminated by a deliberate change in Scope 2 accounting.
The worrying signal is this combination:
Underlying emissions appear to have been growing at perhaps 10–15% already, and Microsoft then increased infrastructure investment by more than 60% in the following year while AI demand remained supply-constrained.
Efficiency is improving quickly. Clean-energy contracting is enormous: 40 GW contracted and 19 GW operating by FY25. � But those are now chasing a moving target.

The picture I get is not “AI caused a one-year emissions spike.” It is:
Microsoft has entered a phase where the physical growth rate of the cloud/AI factory is higher than the decarbonization system's ability to absorb it.
My expectation would therefore be another clearly higher bar in next year's chart—probably not another full 25% jump, but also very unlikely to be the plateau that the FY24 number briefly suggested.

Around 2 years ago everything changed. When it became clear that Microsoft was placing it's biggest bet on AI since Cloud, the culture shifted. Everything focused on delivering ROI on the massive AI investments. After the failure of the Metaverse and Augmented Reality investments, it certainly felt the time of growth mindset learning via fast failure was over and it was time to deliver at all costs on every investment, especially AI.

Making sure that Copilot and the partnership with OpenAI was forefront in every decision became apparent. Even as OpenAI has shifted from partner to competitor to Microsoft, it feels we have so much sunk capital and resource investment in ensuring that Copilot is a success that we are trying to demonstrate all the productivity benefits of AI to our customer by showing how we can internally trim as much operational expenditure out of Microsoft as possible.

Judson seems handcuffed by Amy, to the point where he's now taking a sabbatical. I know so many people at Microsoft either on leave for burnout or who have left over the past 12 months. Good people. Top performers who are just tired of giving their all for diminishing returns. The company has the highest stock price in its history. We are beating earnings estimates quarter after quarter. We have never been stronger. So why does it feel like it is literally the worst time to be at Microsoft?

It is really a paradox to me. Why when things are arguably the best in the history of Microsoft, is it time to treat your most valuable asset, the employees that drive your success, the worst? It really perplexes me.
