Tips for future-present artists, from a past-present artist-in-residence. #dawsoncity #kiac #artistinresidence #artist #tips
Been too busy lately to mess with documentation & its dissemination, because I've been working every day on a large temporary installation. It's hard to tell from these photos, because everything is a mess of salvaged wood, sitting along-side modular pieces of the installation, but it's all there.
From the very beginning: 'Lemonade Stand' (2010). Constructed & performed on-site at the Moon Fields / Cooper Pedy / AU; using borrowed tools/materials, + lemons, sugar & nails. #installation #performance #punk #art #sculpture #australia #moon #justintylertate #repurposed #Solarpunk #Guerrilla
I published 'Foraging Florida' almost exactly a year ago, but then I got busy and didn't have a chance to get my own copy of it. I'm really happy with the way it turned out.
Just finished building this #publicart in #Bentonvile #Arkansas, already working on the next in #Edmonton, #Alberta. See more about the project at the link in my bio.
Consuming large amounts of Wormseed (Dysphania ambrosioides), post flowering, can cause painful infectious diarrhea and vomiting, and as such it should only be harvested before it produces flowers and seeds. #illustration #art #foraging #florida #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
Winged yam (Dioscorea alata) has aerial tubers which must be cooked well in order to destroy any toxins in them - they can be baked, boiled or fried. Its roots can also be cooked and eaten, and are generally bigger than its aerial tubers. #illustration #art #foraging #florida #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
The fruit of Wild Rose (Rosa Spp) can be eaten raw or cooked, however there is a layer of irritating hairs between the fruit’s flesh and seeds that should be removed. Their flesh is often made into things like marmalade, syrup and tea... #illustration #Januarty #foraging #florida #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
Wild Potato Vine (Ipomoea Pandurata) produces a large tuber which resembles a sweet potato & is edible cooked, but if eaten raw will result in vomiting. It's best to harvest immature roots. Roasting is the best way to bring out its sweetness. #illustration #Januarty #foraging #florida #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
All parts of Wild Onion (Allium Canadense) can be eaten raw or cooked: the bulb should be harvested in spring & can be used as you would garlic; leaves can be eaten raw or used as a potherb; flowers can be an attractive & intense garnish. #illustration #Januarty #foraging #florida #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
White Oak's (Quercus Alba) acorns are supposed to be sweet and edible directly from the tree. Some can be bitter and thus require processing. If you do find a source of large, sweet and edible acorns, they can be eaten raw, otherwise... #illustration #Januarty #foraging #florida #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
All parts of White clover (Trifolium repens) are edible: its leaves are best blanched, soaked in salt water, or cooked. Young flowers can be eaten raw in salads, cooked, dried for tea, or ground into flour. The cooked root is also edible. #illustration #Januarty #foraging #florida #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
Some say that eating large doses of Wax Myrtle (Myrica Cerifera) can cause vomiting, stomach upset and liver damage, and people who are pregnant, have hypertension and/or kidney disease should avoid it. #illustration #Januarty #foraging #florida #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
Water Shield's (Brasenia Schreberi) young, curled, leaves can be eaten raw as salad, or cooked as a thickener for soups. Its root can be peeled, cooked and eaten; or it can be peeled, dried, pulverized and then used like flour, or with flour. #illustration #Januarty #foraging #florida #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
Water hyacinth (Pontederia crassipes) is an effective phytoremediator—filtering pollutants and heavy metals from its surroundings—so only harvest it from clean environments. Its flower spikes and young leaves can be eaten after cooking. #illustration #Januarty #foraging #florida #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
Violets (Viola spp) are nutritious when eaten in moderation, however large quantities can make you vomit. Its bland leaves can be eaten raw, dried or cooked, and can be used as a thickener in soups. Tread Softly (Cnidoscolus Stimulosus) has a difficult to access and fragile but edible root which is protected by the plant’s stinging aerial parts. #illustration #Januarty #foraging #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
One explanation for the name “Traveler’s Palm” (Ravenala madagascariensis) is that rain collected in the base of its leaf-stems has been a source of potable water for travelers, but this water is easily contaminated or infested with mosquito larvae. #illustration #Januarty #foraging #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
Swamp Chestnut Oak's (Quercus michauxii) acorns are supposed to be sweet & edible off the tree, however some sources say they contain bitter tannins & thus require processing. If you do find a tree with sweet acorns, then they can be eaten raw... #illustration #Januarty #foraging #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
The only edible part of Sumac (Rhus Copallina) is its sour fuzz. Harvest spikes of its red fruit, remove their stems before briefly blending in a food processor to separate the seeds from the fuzz, then sieve to remove the inedible seeds. #illustration #Januarty #foraging #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
Observe caution when handling St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) as contact with its sap can cause dermatological photosensitivity & ingesting the plant can result in gastrointestinal problems & negative interactions with prescribed medications. #lillustration #Januarty #foraging #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
Spiny amaranth's (amaranthus spinosus) young leaves can be eaten raw, blanched, sautéed or baked. Young shoots can be eaten raw or cooked, and its seeds can be eaten as is; ground and added to flour; used as a thickener; or sprouted and eaten. #lillustration #Januarty #foraging #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️

Although Spanish Bayonet's (Yucca aloifolia) roots contain toxic saponins, they are neutralized through slow cooking. Its flowering stems can be eaten—after peeling and cooking—similarly to asparagus. Its fruit and flowers can be eaten raw or cooked. #botanicalillustration #foraging #artist 🐡 🌿🖼️
