“It’ll be fine,” I say, heading to my locker before the other guys rush in. Skipping the shower today, but that’s nothing new for my socially anxious ass. “This isn’t my first rodeo.”
“I don’t think rodeo clowns are proficient by their second, though?”
“I figured I was the cowboy in this analogy, but I see how you think of me.”
“Impaled on the end of a bull horn,” he mutters.

“I think putting a vampire and a werewolf on the same team is a worse idea than me teaming up with a rat,” the cat said. “But I guess we already did that, and the universe didn’t implode.”
London nodded on all counts. “Loop, can you please put him down? He won’t hurt us.” Loop raised one eyebrow at London, but she released Steve’s blanket. He crashed to the ground.
“Dibs on staking the traitor when he betrays us,” Loop said quickly, as if they were in competition.
The vampire grabbed his sunglasses and clambered to one knee, bowing his head in Necrolas’s direction. His sunglasses slipped down his straight nose. “Your Majesty, allow me to formally pledge myself to your cause. Please accept my humble apologies for attempting to eat your human and steal your bones.”
“Do you, by any chance, have brethren a smidgen larger who might join us?” Necrolas asked.

Steve adjusted his sunglasses and smoothed his black hair with a hand nearly as pale as bone. He touched his fingers to his nose. “You made me bleed,” he whined, wrapping himself in his blanket.
“You tried to eat me!” London said.
His long tongue snaked out and rooted up his nose. Putting the blanket over his head like a hood, he turned and ran away.
“Stop right there, bloodsucker!” Necrolas called after him. “Come back and face us!”
“Um, how about no?” London said. “May I remind you, he tried to eat me? Did you see his teeth? SO MANY TEETH!”
“Oh, a human was almost eaten? Must be a day that ends in ‘y.’”

#SFFChat Q4: I’m going to do kind of the opposite because Finn doesn’t so much value compassion for him (which he sees as embarrassing pity) but he is a GOOBER who NEEDS it and since Nyx is his clone from the future, she’s just as bad or worse on account of post-apocalyptic Trauma

“You don’t know you’ll die,” Mal said. All their outrage melted away.
“Yeah? Heroes just go to The End, never come back, and then The End shows up again without them two hundred years later—what do you think happens to them?”
“Depends who you ask. The Keepers of Bravery say you go to the Kingdom of Eltrus and become gods.”
“You’re only proving my point. Nobody knows. That’s why religion has to make up stuff to believe in. To make me excited that I’ve been divinely chosen to sacrifice myself. It’s not a choice, not really. My life for everyone’s lives.” Finn shivered, but he wasn’t cold. “It’s not fair. I only just… I…”
A lump lodged in his throat. His eyes burned. He couldn’t talk anymore. Mal didn’t ask him to. They wrapped their arms around Finn’s shoulders and held him while he sobbed, painful wracking quakes rending through his body. The sirens of emergency vehicles sang through the night. A passenger airship cruised overhead. Mal held Finn for a long time.
It all felt terribly, painfully normal.
A normal that would be gone forever in thirteen days.

The streets were empty, quiet, and dark as they ran to the airship, its sails visible over the tops of the single-floored houses. They ran with their weapons drawn, but no goblin sentries guarded the streets, no humans broke the rules of their curfew, and no more kidnappers made their intentions known.
Before long, Gertrude could see the field and the town stable, and the airship further on, bustling with the missing patrol. The whirring of rapidly spinning propellers erupted on the air. They raised the gangplank.
“No, no, no,” Beatrix said, stumbling onto the plush grass of the field, grass that dragged at Gertrude’s feet as if begging her to stay. As if she had a choice.

Night blanketed the Rootless Woods. Gertrude’s eyes had adjusted as much as they could to the darkness, and unseen branches kept smacking her in the face. Nobody had spoken for a long while.
Gertrude cleared her throat. “Excuse me, sapling,” she said, “where are we headed?”
East, the sapling said. There’s a settlement close by.
“That should be Palortown, right?” Gertrude waited. When he said nothing more, she broke the silence again. “So, what can we call you?”
Prince of the Forest. Ward of the Trees. Child of the Green. Sapling. I think that’s all of them, in your language anyway.
“But what’s your name?”
I don’t have a name, the sapling said.
“Oh.”
While Gertrude had never had the opportunity to practice her small talk, this attempt felt particularly bad.

Crystal held the door for Nyx, who begrudgingly released her hold on it with her foot and climbed the stairs, lumbering behind Doreen to the apartment. She lowered the bags to the kitchen floor as the television, still powered on and receiving the broadcast, flashed images of destruction—great winds uprooting trees, buildings crumbling, The End’s soul-splintering roar. Nyx thought it was more reporting until a voice said, “We live in uncertain times… but we’re here to help. At Erdrick’s Insurance, we—”
The television shut off. Doreen set the remote on the table. “Bleak times,” she said. “Profiting off of so much death…”
Nyx didn’t know what insurance was in this context, but she was both unsurprised and disappointed by the profiteering of this time. All she’d ever known was people profiting from death, taking more than they needed, spreading suffering to the survivors of the Waste. She’d hoped for some manner of utopia from the Before Times, a place that knew all the good it had and provided for all its people, but was never foolish enough to expect it.

“In the coming days, the Air Force will continue its assault. The Coast Guard has reached Leviathan Shore and is prepared to meet The End when it reaches land. Every branch of our armed forces is en route to Magusport, as well as the military might of our allies. We are doing everything in our power to make up for the Hero’s absence. And still, I must be honest with you, the Prytian people: I am as frightened as you are. For all our technological and magical advancements, nothing we do fazes the World Eater. We need the Hero now more than we ever have in our history as a civilization. Please, if you know who the Hero is, tell them we need their help. Tell them—”
The power button of the TV remote sunk beneath Finn’s thumb. Hands trembling, Finn dropped the remote to the coffee table with a clatter and set his mug down roughly enough that a jet of coffee launched to the floor. He breathed in through his nose, hoping the air would push the nausea back down his throat. His heart thudded in his chest, each beat a moment wasted, proof of time slipping away. How many heartbeats were left before The End consumed everything? How many seconds did Finn have to count his regrets?

“Mr. Day,” Mr. Lottle said, like a motion-activated toy, “if I could have a moment of your time?”
He was still by the window—or possibly by the window again, but doing an entire lecture in front of the window while contemplating the futility of teaching teenagers history seemed like a major cry for help. He nursed his travel mug of coffee.
Mal whispered a teasing, “Oooo, Finnie’s in trouble.”
“I’ll meet you downstairs,” Finn said, swinging his bag over his shoulder.
“Try to hurry it up. Cold fries are the worst, and I can’t promise my restraint. When I taste that perfect combo of crispy and salty, gosh darn.” They skipped away, combat boots squeaking against the floor and their knee-length cardigan flowing as they twirled into the hallway.
Finn took a deep breath before facing a fate surely worse than death by giant monster: the disappointment of a teacher desperately hoping a lost cause can pull it together. Spoiler alert: Finn would never manage. He was so lost, in fact, he’d already collapsed from lack of food and water and was simply waiting for the wolves of academia to consume his flesh from his still warm bones. Kids like him—poor kids, mentally ill kids, kids from a single-parent household—didn’t make it out of the slums without some exceptional skills, and Finn didn’t have a single skill to his name.

Nyx had no trouble staying on her feet as she inserted herself into an ongoing swordfight between a frightened boy who couldn’t be older than twelve and an old man with more gold in his mouth than dentin. Nyx kicked the geezer in the knee with a crunch and he fell over, crying out.
“Thanks, miss!” the boy said, blond hair soaked with sweat and sea spray. “For The Hero!”
And he rushed immediately into another swordfight.
“For The Hero,” Nyx said dispassionately.
The kid must have been Leon the Cub, a child stowaway on the General Celeste’s Retribution, Captain Tidesong’s flagship who ended up as one of his staunchest allies. His stats in Visions of The End weren’t great and generally the fandom hated him for constantly needing to be rescued and generally being a stock annoying kid character. But he clearly had bravery to spare.

“Two Heroes come to me today,” Miss Hypatia said. “One has rebuked my assistance rather rudely. The other first met me two hundred years from now. A curious day indeed. The moon’s filling, however. Strange things are bound to arrive.”
“Uh, yeah. I guess.” Hands clenched in his lap, Finn said, “I know I rejected your help yesterday. It’s... it’s a lot to put on one guy’s shoulders. But I’m here now.”
“So you are,” Miss Hypatia said.
She stopped talking. Those buggy eyes of hers locked on Finn, unblinking. Finn’s hands wrung in his lap.
Nyx nudged Finn with her boot. “She’s waiting on an apology,” she whispered, despite the silence in the room making any whispering pointless.
Finn had the distinct urge to just get up and leave. She was stalking him! She showed up at his house! She was the bearer of bad—worse, apocalyptic—news, here to teach him how to kill himself by running right into a monster that plows through tanks and buildings and earth, and she expected him to apologize to her! What about the apology he was owed?
Nyx fully kicked Finn’s leg. Finn scowled at her. But the longer he waited, the clearer it was nothing was getting done without that apology.
Finn barely suppressed an eye roll, but he said, “I’m sorry.”
Miss Hypatia made a satisfied little grunt, but still she waited. Like all of the worst teachers he’d ever had, she clearly expected a lot more ass kissing.
“Can you pretty please help me defeat The End, Miss Hypatia?”
The old woman slurped her tea. She gulped. She smacked her puffy lips. Finn began to regret letting the urge to condescend win.
But then the old woman stood. “What you first must know is The End is unstoppable.”

Crystal’s quick adoption of gallows humour struck Nyx as something sad. A sharp decline from her palpable worry this morning. A loss of innocence only her brother could prevent, and no one even knew where he was.
He’d suggested it was Nyx’s fault, the end of the world. That had rattled her. But once the okscuri had been killed and he’d fled, she returned to a state of cold logic and wondered about it. It simply made no sense. Her world had to exist in order for her to exist. Her world might even have been the other Finn’s world, meaning something else happened to mess up the Cycle of The End. There was a catalyst before her that reset time. Even if, in the worst case scenario, that catalyst was a previous Nyx, it wasn’t her just as the Finn she witness in Miss Hypatia’s vision wasn’t him.
A headache formed right between her eyes. Fucking time travel. It confused the hells out of her.

Xander nodded and followed them to the hallway. Darby nudged little shoes out of the middle of the corridor, closer to the kids’ cubbies, and went upstairs first. The thing about being an orc, Darby knew after their young lifetime, was that you tended to be the biggest person in any given room—and that’s if you were lucky enough to be thought of as a person. Big is sometimes awed, in society. People gaze up at big buildings. They write poetry about big feelings. But just as often, if not more, big is feared. That was especially true of orcs.
Most orcs, throughout most of history, used that external fear and turned it into internal anger, lashing out at other peoples and cultures, taking and destroying like a child throwing a centuries long temper tantrum. Darby, however, has used it for empathy. For hyper awareness. For knowing when people are uncomfortable and trying their very best to accommodate them.
Which is why they went up the stairs first, allowing Xander to follow.

“People are starting to get a little crazy, if you ask me,” he said, unprompted. If we don’t stick together, what’s the point of anything? That thing hasn’t killed us yet.”
Finn wasn’t so sure the craziness was new. It looked more to Finn like society was showing seams it already had; the stitching coming apart had only been a matter of time.
“People just suck,” he said. A deep, innate truth that simply couldn’t be disputed after what he’d just seen.
But Tyler said, “I dunno. Earlier today my neighbours—an elderly couple, they’re always bringing us cookies and mowing our lawn, they were helping a family load up their car. Distracting their young kids from all the fear and the panic. Putting their community first when they could have been rushing to get on the road before them, right? I’m not convinced people as a whole suck. I need to believe people are better than this. It’s just that sometimes, when we’re afraid, we let our worst instincts get the best of us. And some powerful people, people who think their money and fame make them invincible even now, decide to use their power to rile up our fear.”

Your favorite character that you’ve written comes to life for one day. What do you do together for 24 hours?

K: My favourite character I’ve ever written is Leaf, a small Ent-like tree boy in my current work in progress, Goblin Girl. He’s a cross between Ariel in The Little Mermaid and Vivi in Final Fantasy IX, and he’s just the most precious little guy. I would take him out for ice cream or a movie, or maybe to a museum, so that he may learn more of the curious customs of us “squishies.”
