Not every kid who visits Grand Canyon becomes a geologist. But the one on the left of this pic did. The other one majored in zoology 🤷🏻♀️. Me & my sis. Grand Canyon, Thanksgiving 1987
Starved Rock State Park has more slot canyons carved into the St Peter Sandstone. We visited Wildcat Canyon and French Canyon
Spent a few days in central IL with extended family. Matthiessen State Park views. The hike down the dell was an adventure with cousins and aunts & uncles.
Dear humanity, please stop with the balloons. @nautiluslive.org ROVLittle Hercules is nearly 6000m deep on abyssal plain seafloor far from land. The 3rd item they zoomed on was this balloon 😩😢 nautiluslive.org #NoBalloons
and they have gift boxes of mini bottles which make GREAT stocking stuffers or house-warming or hostess gifts. We love syrup.
Erika, I’m so sorry for the loss of your friend. Grieving in rapid succession is draining and hard to come out of. Please accept a sunflower photo from today to be a little brightness at this time
Turbidities, bioturbation & geopetal structures, cleavage, phyllitic sheen and view of glacial cut mountains. Team bonding on the rocks. A great stop. Thanks, Callan.
Looks like 9408m was the deepest for the centerline of the sonar beam on this route.
E/V Nautilus is at the Mariana Trench. Seafloor is at 8800m so far... getting deeper. Watch the multibeam path from the ship right now at nautiluslive.org
These images are not award worthy but this is my first Golden-reined Digger wasp observation. She’s carrying a large green katydid to provision her nest. Wow.
Day 5 - screens on the “science wall” kept us location-obsessed satisfied. My mini research group chose to use the collected water for our project so we started filtering select bottles to capture plankton & other particles. Dinner. Let’s just say we ate well. Every single meal.
Day 3 = 1st day at sea! After leaving port we saw some whales, sea otters, many birds in the bay. Deployed plankton net and practiced getting in and out of the red survival “gumby” suits during a drill. My first geology-from-the-boat stops. ophiolite outcrop!
2nd day: visit Exit Glacier outside of town & board R/V Sally Ride! I can’t express how exciting this all felt. Exit Glacier has retreated, the trail now doesn’t get as near it as in years past. Ate quick lunch in Seward then loaded gear & checked in at the bridge before a ship tour.
1st day field trip stops between Anchorage & Seward. Earthquake Park, graywacke & turbidite outcrops, & Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center.
It’s Thursday, I left home a week ago so perhaps now is a good time to share what we’ve done on #STEMSEAS2yc2026 #STEMSEAS Some images of flight to Anchorage. Book club reading Coming Into The Country, flight path, view out to GLACIERS!
I’m packing for #STEMSEAS, pile of clothes awaiting arrangement in the duffel bag. Simultaneously watching @schmidtocean.bsky.social ROV SuBastian descending near Mid-Atlantic Ridge #Doldrums & #Okeanos ROV Deep Discoverer at seafloor near Hawaii’s Big Island.
It’s past late spring here. It’s fully summer. Flippin’ hot and sticky today. Pouring sweat while taming some front yard prairie. Feels like 97° at 12:42. Houston.
Just in case you imagined the seafloor near mid-ocean ridges as black basalt and darkness. Check out the colors in these spires! reds, purples, oranges, white
spires at the top of the vent structure. #HydrothermalVents adjacent to Mid-Atlantic Ridge near the #Doldrums fracture zone.
swarms of pale shrimp at warm water vents. spectacular surreal structures with horizontal shelves jutting out supporting delicate mineral spires. #Doldrums #HydrothermalVent
Temperature probe indicates 10.8ºC. Warm compared to 2.16ºC of surrounding seawater, but not HOT. #doldrums #HydrothermalVent
