Finally seated for THE ODYSSEY round 2! This time in 70MM real IMAX. One of the few screens in the world showing it in this format. 🤩
Long overdue INTERSTELLAR rewatch was a ride. More emotional than I remembered. Tears aplenty. McConaughey masterclass. Hathaway incredible. Just a great supporting cast. Visually off the charts. A heater from Zimmer. Incredible story. TARS & CASE rule. Absolute banger. Might be my favorite Nolan.
Unbeknownst to me, when I decided to watch THE DARK KNIGHT RISES on a long flight just taken, it was the film’s 14 year anniversary! I was jonesing for more Nolan and Anne Hathaway after watching THE ODYSSEY. Anne owns this movie.
My screening of THE ODYSSEY was a wonderful & memorable communal experience. The elderly couple next to me (that I expected to talk a lot & move around) did not budge. They were locked in the entire time. The woman on my right and I were at one moment weeping together. It was beautiful.
THE ODYSSEY round one (IMAX) in the books. Hitting a 70mm real IMAX screening on the 30th. Can’t wait to see it again. Was enthralled for the entire 3 hour runtime. Top tier Nolan as far as I’m concerned. All departments operating at another level. 🤩🤌
Yes I dug Daniel Goldhaber and Isa Mazzei’s FACES OF DEATH (2026). A crackin’ score. A cool final girl. A great villain. Some gorgeous cinematography (shot on film) and camera moves. The story blends SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and MANIAC (either one) nicely while paying homage to its namesake.
GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN, DON’T DIE rules. Sam Rockwell, Haley Lu Richardson, Zazie Beetz, Juno Temple & co are great. Gore Verbinski directs the hell out of it. A blend of satire, black comedy, drama, & sci-fi. Influenced by everything from THE TERMINATOR to TOY STORY. Visually stunning. Pure cinema.
If you just discovered Eve Hewson because of DISCLOSURE DAY (she’s great in it), I recommend you check out John Carney’s FLORA AND SON which is terrific.
R.F. Kuang’s BABEL is one of the finest books I’ve ever read. Incredibly rich in character and language. Ambitious, epic, passionate, academic, and revolutionary. I fell hard for this story and its characters. I felt like I was both educated and entertained while being inspired to do better.
Finally found time to do the BACKROOMS + OBSESSION double bill (aka BACKSESSION) which was a blast. 2nd time seeing these films. Was stunned at the size of the OBSESSION crowd-75% full. Loved catching these again theatrically. Also realized BACKROOMS + THE STYLIST is a cool “scalping” double bill.
Discussing BACKROOMS and OBSESSION with my barista this morning was a cool experience. It’s really exciting to see people still into the cinematic experience. I even got them interested in checking out the isolated scores (which are incredible on both of these films. #filmsky
Loved BACKROOMS. Superb atmosphere, analog 90’s tech, strange & disturbing aesthetic. Compelling directing & acting. Saw it in an aging theater which felt right. Stoked to get a communal experience with so many young folks. Mind-blowing production & a great score. Can’t stop thinking about it.
Things I listened to yesterday. New Boards of Canada album. The BACKROOMS score. The Boards of Canada track that plays in the end credits of BACKROOMS.
Epic double feature yesterday. Saw MOTHER MARY and OVER YOUR DEAD BODY with my buddy @tomorrowromance.bsky.social. We froze in the first screening. Both films are great.
Dug LEE CRONIN’S THE MUMMY. Big fan of May Calamawy and she was cool in this. The procedural elements were interesting and would have loved more, but May still gets her chance to shine in a big way. Super gross, mean and gory.
Ok AVATAR FIRE AND ASH was epic and ruled. Oona Chaplin is obviously undeniable and a standout. Big Jim still has it.
REDUX REDUX (dir. by Kevin & Matthew McManus) is amazing. A grounded, emotional, compelling sci-fi thriller with a great score & outstanding performances from Michaela McManus & Stella Marcus. This is a must-see gem. And my guy Jeremy Holm is creepy! Go in cold.
BABYLON (2022) and THE BRIDE! (2026) have so much in common, feature my two absolute favorite actors, are divisive, take swings, and I love them both so much.
Jessie Buckley is our finest actor working today. Totally loses herself in a beautiful and fearless performance in the great film, THE BRIDE! Wonderful script from Maggie Gyllenhaal and she directs the hell out of it. See it big and loud.
Women are CRUSHING it this year in cinema. Please keep giving them directing/writing opportunities, budgets like this and creative freedom.
