I had the pleasure of being at Lord’s when Ben Stokes scored the fastest Test century there in 2015 and again at the Ashes Test in 2023 when he scored that irate 155. Two of my best ever days watching cricket. What a player. Irreplaceable.

Reading about the welcome forthcoming release of the uncut version of Ken Russell’s ‘The Devils’ and working out that I must have been 14 (and looked it) when I walked into a cinema to see this highly controversial X film on first release.

Pleased to find I’m staying in Hamburg round the corner from the Markthalle, site of a stunning and violent Clash gig I was at in the late 70s. Strummer was sick of being gobbed at and an offender got a guitar in his head after refusing to stop. Carried out with blood streaming from the wound.

I saw the sunken C17th warship the Vasa 45 years ago In Stockholm and here it is again in a superb new museum space and without water running down its timbers. Magnificent.
I learn from ‘Augustus The Strong’ that Charles XII of Sweden suffered from such appalling sea sickness aged 18 in the Baltic campaign of 1700 that he refused to sail again, ultimately to his strategic detriment. He should have sailed on this morning’s millpond. Now in Stockholm on #interrail26.

Today in Kaunas has not only been scorching hot (not guaranteed - it was minus 40 when Napoleon stayed here) it has also been Mother’s Day, which means scores of people carrying bouquets. And it was the last day of the huge Spring Fair on Laisvés Avenue, with hundreds of stalls.
With yesterday’s rail horror behind us we have spent the day in sun drenched Vilnius. A pleasant city. Took a funicular up to Gediminas’ Castle Tower from which you could see the parade of hundreds of motorcyclists revving along the river. #interrail26
In what has turned into a real life version of Race Across the World, we find ourselves unexpectedly on a coach in the eastern Polish town of Sokólka, hopefully en route to the Lithuanian border at which another coach possibly awaits (the train driver has probably logged off). #interrail26
