It's not just gambling. Add in pandering to fossil fuels, the big 4, property developers etc. And then underline it with the billion$ to AUKUS, which no Australian can see any benefit for, except those who hope to/are profiting. #auspol

Regardless of the merits of a ban (and it certainly has merits: Australia faces the highest per-capita gambling losses in the world), this is something the public wants. It’s something a bipartisan committee recommended. Even John Howard is calling for stronger limits. It should be an open-and-shut case, but it’s not, and anyone even vaguely engaged can grasp why: the government is putting vested interests above the well-being of its citizens.

Is there a connection between this and the growing distrust of the major parties that is driving voters towards the likes of One Nation? It’s hard to draw a definitive parallel. But once again, it feels cumulative, with every decision that shows governments pandering to the whims of big business adding to the feeling that “Canberra” is not on the side of regular people.

None of this is Pauline Hanson’s project. Her project – as the voting record demonstrates, as the Rinehart relationship demonstrates, as the scarf and the burqa and the dyed hair demonstrate – is the perpetuation of a performance. And the performance’s function, whatever its performer’s intentions, is to ensure that the anger of the people who have been left behind does not threaten the arrangements that left them behind.

And every election candidate needs to hammer that ON intend to abolish TGA (they set standards & test drugs for compliance) & worse, slash the PBS. No doubt on Gina and Trump’s orders. They’ve weasel worded it, but you can read between the lines. That will affect a lot of the older voters.

Abolish the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and roll its essential functions into the Department of Health.

Yet the government continues to approve fossil fuel projects, has repeatedly rejected advice to substantially increase the rate of jobseeker payments, balked at a blanket ban on gambling advertising, is resisting pressure to tax gas exports and remains in lockstep with the US despite Donald Trump’s hostility and disregard for international law.

Don't always agree with Bernard, but this is correct:

Australians need a real debate about escaping the toxic embrace of this damaging country. Foreign policy rarely plays a significant role in Australian elections, which are instead dominated by economic issues, but come 2028, we may have all the evidence we need of the extent to which our deeply flawed, US-aligned foreign policy has very real consequences for the economic circumstances and personal safety of ordinary Australians. Too bad Albanese and his government are literally incapable of seeing that.
