Oh crap! I just realized that I forgot to post this for (American) (i.e. REAL) Mothers' Day. This is a genuine screenshot of a genuine email that my mom sent me in 2014, when the Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock hit the US

FINALLY, I GET TO TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT SHERLOCK!! It was really, really on my mind practically all of Monday. I really, really liked Sherlock and I really, really liked the last two episodes but I NEEDED TO TALK TO SOMEONE about the episodes!! I was starting to wonder if I was displaying signs of addiction! Scenes of the last episode kept flashing through my head.

I think they might have been the most enjoyable two episodes of any TV show in my life, but I needed to TALK to someone because they didn't fit with prior episodes. I'm glad you POINTED OUT where it was incongruous! YES, Sherlock suddenly had terrible planning skills!! That's IT! That's what was WRONG! How could Sherlock, who planned things down to seconds at times, suddenly have NO Plan B for an admittedly DANGEROUS mission-- to see (and probably destroy) Magnussen's vaults.

I was so taken and yet so bothered by the last episode that I spent an hour after that (and it was already late!) looking up reviews of the last season of Sherlock. Turns out that the last three episodes were based on Conan Doyle's stories with a contemporary twist. For example, The Last Vow was based on Conan Doyle's The Last Bow. And he looks so INTENSE about it. Like he's going to spike that beach ball into the ribcage of a mafioso.

Decided at the eleventh hour to put some slides together for my Conflict in Comics panel (about depictions of violence). Here is the one I'm proudest of

Yesss I found it! Any of these outfits from Mark Twain's writings on how the Native Hawaiians first approached wearing Western clothing would certainly make any kid stand out. TL;DR: they treated the clothes as non-gendered & purely decorative, not for covering up specific body parts

EXCERPT FROM MARK TWAIN'S WRITINGS ON HIS VISIT TO HAWAII IN THE 1840S: The natives soon manifested a strong proclivity for clothing, but it was shortly apparent that they only wanted it for grandeur. The missionaries imported a quantity of hats, bonnets, and other male and female wearing apparel, instituted a general distribution, and begged the people not to come to church naked, next Sunday, as usual. And they did not; but the national spirit of unselfishness led them to divide up with neighbors who were not at the distribution, and next Sabbath the poor preachers could hardly keep countenance before their vast congregations.

In the midst of the reading of a hymn a brown, stately dame would sweep up the aisle with a world of airs, with nothing in the world on but a "stovepipe" hat and a pair of cheap gloves; another dame would follow, tricked out in a man’s shirt, and nothing else; another one would enter with a flourish, with simply the sleeves of a bright calico dress tied around her waist and the rest of the garment dragging behind like a peacock’s tail off duty; a stately "buck" Kanaka would stalk in with a woman’s bonnet on, wrong side before — only this, and nothing more; after him would stride his fellow, with the legs of a pair of pantaloons tied around his neck, the rest of his person untrammeled; in his rear would come another gentleman simply gotten up in a fiery neck-tie and a striped vest.
