I am Luke Parnell, I play and design board and card games. I have been a professional artist for 20 years, avid hiker and northerner. While this space will centre on board game design I will also show my art practice.
Filleting and jarring sockeye salmon for the winter. Maybe there will be some leftover for mulligan soup tonight.
I’m doing some solo play testing of my new trick taking lane battler. The solo is just random but is good for testing mechs. I’m using minis from Halo: Flashpoint for the battling. It works pretty well, I need to test with people because the automa is easy to beat. Using the minis adds a lot.
I completed my solo learning game of Federation I scored 127 points but I didn’t use everything and learned as it went. The automa is easy to use as this is a beat your own score solo game. It just restricts your worker placement spaces and adds rising point thresholds for scoring.
I’m playing a learning game of Federation with the solo mode. I’ve wanted this game since it was first on KS, but it was 2 to 4 players. I finally broke down and bought it and the solo expansion. I still haven’t figured it all out yet.
My birthday today, I’m turning old years old. “Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, there’s tears in my cupcake, happy birthday to me.”
My board game haul from Montreal and Vancouver. Crits and Tricks, The Bloody Inn and a friend gave me Lone Wolf and Cub game, it’s not well rated but I love the IP. Not shown Flamecraft metal coins and mini expansion for Civolution.
Some work from my exhibition at the Daphne Art Centre in Montreal. It’s the first time I’ve shown all digital artwork. Not shown is my short film “Remediation.”
Having a smoked meat sandwich from Schwartz’s deli in Montreal and watching some World Cup futbol.
I ran a card game making workshop with eight participants, it went really well. My present skills need work but it’s a solid workshop.
I did some playtesting on Wednesday night, I tested War Canoe, Feral Feline Furenzii (not seen). And for the first play test ever, AWG: Let’s gets some Pins and a blind test of 3 Ravenz. I got some amazing feedback, it was really fun, thank you to those who came out!
I’m running a workshop where we will develop a small modern card game using traditional card games as a base. It‘s about iteration as a process ofgame development. We will work in teams to make games that speak to your experiences. It’s on Thursday night at the Daphne Art centre in Montreal.
I’m running a pop up playtest event in Montreal at the Daphne art centre next Wednesday evening, sign up and bring your prototypes on down Here are the zeffy links for people to sign up to Playtesting Workshop: www.zeffy.com/en-CA/ticket...
Some card art for the 3 Ravenz card game, this a killer whale/Supernatural Being.
The latest version of my virtual board for my latest prototype. I e been updating the virtual board based on play tests, it helps me think just to look at it.
The second play test is done, with tweaks pretty much everywhere, it is a much more engaging game. The more robust automa, which just blocks spaces really did a great job.
I finished my first solo play test, the game works, a lot of dice chucking with mitigation. I can already see some rule changes. I like the Hugo card look for the player board/pin collection. I can’t wait to try it with people
This will be my first test of my newest idea, AWG: Let’s get some Pins! Dice rolling, worker Placement and set collection
I’m still working on making a prototype but working on the board helps me develop the idea as I go. I have no idea if it will work in real life, but I like this process because it like an idea board. I like the look of the background tho.
I’m working on a new game, the working title is, AWG: Let’s get some Pins!, the game is a series of mini-games. It’s primarily a dice rolling, worker placement, set collection game, it plays 1 to 5 players. It’s about collecting pins at the Arctic Winter Games. I love game design.
I’m spending a few days in Gingolx BC, I saw a little grizzly on the way up.
I am taking the feedback I got from my last prototype of the 3 Ravenz Trick Taking Game and making a new prototype. I have written countless drafts of my rulebook in the last year and tweaked a few rules.
Based on feedback from blind play testing of my rulebook and my prototype, I’m redesigning the cards and I’ve done extensive rewrites of my rulebook. This will be the basic design for pip cards, 1 to 10 in 4 suits. I will be documenting the creation of a new deck for 3 Ravenz.
Set up and ready to play learning game of Nippon Z. There is a lot of empty space in the retail box, it came with a large styrofoam piece that I cut into 3 pieces and it fit the player boards and the rest of the game components perfectly. I used the Harvest ani-meeples box for resources and yen.
A shot of the instal and the pencil drawing I’m doing at the front of the gallery. The show opens today at 2pm.
